Emergency Alerts

In the News

Update - 3PM on Sunday 23rd April 2023 the Government will be testing a nationwide alert system on all smartphones. You may receive a loud alarm. It is a practice alert and you should keep calm and carry on.

Forewarned is forearmed as it were. Don't be surprised if one day you get a security alert on your phone. This is a new government issue. It doesn't cost and you don't need to download anything.

They've got your number lol

Emergency alerts will only be sent by the emergency services or government departments, agencies and public bodies dealing with emergencies and, for most, the chance of receiving an alert will be fairly low.

Probably get a emergency alert 5 seconds after I'm vaporised as unfortunately I'm close to a military target.

I knew about this, but I never received an alert (like an Amber Alert). The other day at night there was a fight on the street, I was washing my teeth while this happened... I dunno what caused it or if the police was even called, I just heard a woman screaming (maybe "stop") near the end of it.

Let's say the guy was innocent that got attacked, but legally he couldn't even carry pepper spray as that's against the law so he had no way to defend himself. This reminds me, a guy from Texas once said: Sometimes you have to think about what's more important, your life or the law, and that's the difference that may keep you alive.

The law should change as so legally biding citizens can carry pepper spray or a firearm for protection.

I think Defensive martial arts are good. Just enough to divert ,distract and defend. Not aggressive just safe and justifiable defence.

It would prefer a warning in the style of Lance Corporal Jones, might as well go with a smile.

There is another planned Emergency alert on Sunday 23rd April -

The UK Government’s Emergency Alerts system will be tested nationally on April 23rd at 3pm.

The system will warn people when their lives are in danger. An Emergency Alert is a loud, siren-like sound with a message on your mobile phone screen.

Well what's the point of alerting us? We won't be able to do anything, I would sooner not know!

They do this in other countries already, for a number of years since smartphones became widely used. My workplace have advised people to either switch off or use aeroplane mode to avoid the noise - for those who are considered vulnerable

hspexy The U.S. does, for example, yeah, but this is just another means of obedience and control by the government and scare them with emergency alerts whenever they feel like it.

I've turned emergency alerts off, personally.

JLouM It should have been any DEVICE (Phone or tablet) that was connected via 4g or 5g.

Most older phones use 2g or 3g which are starting the be fazed out, most started doing it at the end of 2022.

'All operators have agreed with the government to switch off 2G and 3G by 2033'

If you use a Samsung phone, this is where you may or should find the option to turn it off:

People lived decades and centuries without emergency alerts and now they need it? No. This should be optional than opt-out, but since it's automatically activated then disable it if you want.

I was just reading an article in the news about this and people are being warned not to click on any links or call any numbers that may appear with the warning

Scammers might use the alert as an excuse to try to get peoples bank details etc

When you get the alert do nothing, just delete it after

I don't see the point of it. Other than maybe the government having control over you. Plus it's a good way of killing a few people so less benefits to pay.

Mine was a minute early. I was in the next room to my partner, we both weren't on our phones. His flagged up with the image but didn't make a noise, mine made a noise for the whole street. 😬

I didn't get any alert because my phone is not 4/5G or any kind of smart phone so I expect to be fossilised like a dinosaur when the flood hits unless Image

KAW18 When the U.K. gets hit with a wildfire, hurricanes, cyclones, floodings.... They're selling the population a lie.

Like, the government helped people being locked down and tried to segregate people based on their medical status, great, right? Sigh...

Just a heads up, you might need to turn your devices off and on again.

Just read a report on the emergency alert test.

- It was spelt wrong in Welsh.

- Those on the network 3 didn’t get an alert at all.

- Some people got it multiple times.

- Some people got it when they turned their phone on if it was off at 3pm.

- People couldn’t phone out or answer calls afterwards.

We just tried and it only worked after we turned our phones off and on again, otherwise it kept saying call failed.
