English Woman Woke up One Day with a Welsh Accent

In the News

When i first saw this article i thought it must be a joke

How someone can go to sleep one night and wake up the next day with a different accent

In this case she woke up with a Welsh accent despite normally speaking in an English tone

But this wasn't the only time this has happened to her, previously she woke up with a German accent !

She has had to quit her job at Wetherspoons because of this, as she was worried the regulars might take offence and think she was being funny with them

But this is a medical condition called Functional Neurological Disorder, and she was diagnosed with it in 2022

There is also another condition called Xenoglossy where people not only speak in a foreign accent but can read write and speak in another language despite never learning it

I suppose this puts a different slant on the phrase 'mind your language'

telmel Nearly a completely different language in North Wales. It's called 'Gog' down in the South.

There's one thing that I was upset with my parents for and that's not bringing me up bilingual. It's still the same in my hometown now, predominantly English speaking.

Everyone in the village that we live in now speak Welsh, and the surrounding villages, but that'll change soon because of all the building and 'outsiders' buying to commute.

TheChimp We were taught to read & write Welsh in school when I was there but that was such a long time ago TBH I have forgotten most of it but funnily enough it meant that when I moved to England I picked up French & German really easily.

I do feel for you though, the commuters are taking over the whole country! At least you will be able to talk about them whilst standing next to them and they won't know what you are saying 😆

tumblespots I had to take Welsh for the first 3 years in secondary school which still gives me a basic understanding, but was told by my teachers that it would be better to take French for O level, so that's what I did. I'm gutted now, but I can speak some French 🤣

tumblespots Pryhawn Da every time.

I feel like I've missed out and am still missing out on not speaking Welsh fluently. No point in S4C for me and it's annoying because there's lots of local stuff on there.

TheChimp That's a shame, no watching Pobol y Cwm for you then, although, if you keep watching you will pick more up.

tumblespots I think that they used to do an Omnibus programme for Pobol y Cwm on the weekend which used to have subtitles, but I wouldn't be able to read them now because of my peepers.

You`re never too old to learn another language or to learn anything to be honest with you. The same as you`re never too old to hold hands or to fall In love. I am Welsh and proud of It. I went to a Welsh School. I live In England now. English was forbidden at my School.
