Have You Ever Heard of Water Intoxication ?

Ask a Question

I was reading about a little boy in the US who had drunk too much and suffered

Water intoxication

www.mirror.co.uk/news/us-news/boy-10-rushed-hospital-water-30448855

and I had never heard of it.

I was telling my husband about it, saying did you know if you drunk too much water and before I could say any more he said you get Water intoxication and he went on to describe the symptons.

The way he was talking, was that it was common knowledge, I had never heard of it before, had you ?

No, I hadn't but I am constantly being told to drink more water and I already drink about 4-6 glasses per day plus one coffee and sometimes a cup of tea. How much is too much?

Lynibis I think it was more about drinking lots of water in a short period of time, as your body can't cope, as you dilute the sodium concentration in your blood, which can cause neurological symptoms such as weakness, seizures, or impaired brain functioning. (looked that up). I think the story I read said, he drunk 6 bottles of water in an hour, it didn't say the size but that's 3-6 litres, 500 ml. or 1ltr bottles.

I would get him tested for diabetes, if he was that thirsty 😀

beccatavender Ah yes of course, that would make sense. I got a little worried as I never add salt to anything as we are told we get enough from the food we eat, but I do suffer from headaches and woozy head from time to time. I didn't read the article properly just skimmed it.

beccatavender No, I haven't heard of this before. Only the opposite of not drinking enough water. I can only manage 4 cups of boiled, cooled water and fruit juice and tea per day and that's it.

jam45 I find that if you have a big of water by the side of you, it's surprising, how much you drink, without realising it, it has helped my water consumption, I make up a big of lemon squash

Your body knows when it needs more water. I don't always follow this advice but it is recommended to always carry water with you when out and about. There have been some health influencers who have preached almost to force more water down even when you aren't thirsty especially linked to performance sports. This can not only cause water intoxication but it flushes out important minerals and vitamins so depletes the body of these which is not good for your health. Almost everyone has the right instincts for taking on more water. Unfortunately like many others instead of taking on water (which is boring) I often take in other drinks like Pepsi Max in my case. If you go by your thirst and drink pure water (home filtered is fine) or fresh water from a natural spring you'll be doing the right thing.

I have heard of it - as an adult, I've followed the rule of drinking 2 litres of plain water a day (or less if I'm getting natural liquid from water based fruits like watermelon) but know the 'recommended amount' varies depending on your build, age etc.

Yes I've heard of it although I couldn't tell you the symptoms. I think it use to happen alot in the rave scene in the 80s/90s when people took drugs.

My hubby and my son drink lots of water throughout the day. I’m the one who should drink more to keep well hydrated.

Yes I've heard drinking way too much water than recommended can have negative effects. I personally believe not everyone has to drink 6-8 glasses a day .. it just sounds like too much especially if you're not too active and a petite person.
