Did You Ever Have a Perm When You Were Younger?
Ask a Question
Okay, this is aimed at us minority male posters on LD , but anyones opinion is welcome
I am first to hold my hand up, i used to have one for a while when it was all the fashion in the 80s with the pop stars and football players
But i looked more like Bobby Ball than Alan Ball with my dark moustache , and i was no Kevin Keegan either
The worst part for me was sitting in the salon, barbers didn't do this back then, i am not sure if any do now, more likely to be unisex hairdressers
I used to be highly embarrassed in the ladies salon and would end up blushing when it was finished and used to make a quick exit
Nowadays younger men are wearing makeup and female attire and nobody bats an eyelid , but back then it was pioneering , at least for me
I still have enough hair to have one done now it is as straight as a die , but i have no inclination to put myself through it at my age , i would probably end up looking like an ageing Leo Sayer
So will anyone else fess up about this or was i the only one ?
Lol not by choice - it was the trend at the time, so my mum thought it was a good idea to give me one. I’ve never chosen to have one
Not me.I'm natural and wavy and I like it that way ..no hair dye either just salt n pepper..more salt than pepper these days though lol.
telmel Nor make up either.Wore it once as a teenager looked like coco the clown.Strong features.
MelissaLee1 You must have saved an absolute fortune over the years not buying it M and also saved getting wrinkles from using it on and around the face and eyes
telmel True but wasted it on a hedonistic youth lol.No wrinkles.Chubby chops lol.
As a female I had many perms but these were all done at home by my mum. My mum also did her friends and her friends done hers. Never went to a hairdressers.
I still have them and have been having them all my life even though they aren't particularly fashionable any more, but..... from information from my hairdresser more young men are having them again these days so 'keep 'em peeled'
I had permed hair in 92, I remember that cos I was almost 27, went in a pub dressed down with long permed hair in chunky Jumper & jeans with my 4ft 11in friend Lindsay almost 20 who had her long dark hair in a bun.
We got served but 2 days later on the Sunday we dressed up & got refused alcohol! The landlord said he took over the pub & he was kicking all the under age drinkers out! My friend challenged him telling him that he had served us on Friday when we weren't dressed up but wouldn't serve us now. The landlord agreed to serve us but we had to bring our ID in next time so we did & had no trouble.
janphoenix51 Its a welcome compliment when you are older J , being called too young , but can make things like this difficult
Did I ever.....about 3! It was the only way I could control my thick, wirey, frizzy hair. I just wish I had discovered coconut oil sooner
No me, I always had thin hair so there wasn't much I could do with it, I definitely wouldn't have had a perm though lol
martinlufc5637 I seem to be in the minority M as far as us males go
I think i was influenced too much by the singers and footballers
And i remember the pain was excruciating , like having your hair caught in a mangle !
I am surprised it didn't fall out after that and with the chemicals
Me and brothers always had skinhead, my mum cut our hair lol dad was a miner so money was tight growing up
Same here regarding money M, we had a big family and times were tough , but it's a good thing, it makes you appreciate things more later in life and you value them more
I went to a friends house after school and her mum did mine.. never again I hated it but must of been in 93
They had it right centuries ago L , if they wanted to change from straight to curly they used to wear wigs, less painful
Oh my yes, I had what they called a cork-screw perm. Long curls. lol. I don't need one now as it's now naturally curly. Not sure what happened there but about 5 years ago I decided to let my hair grow and yup it's as curly as curly gets lol.
Yes, when I was a teenager, nagged and nagged my Mum to get one and I made the mistake of coming home and washing my hair because the smell was making me feel sick. So, ruined it, but my Mum made me keep it until it grew out as it cost so much. Not my finest look.
I had one in the 80s when all the fashion as a teenager. I cringe when I see pictures now though .
I had a perm in the 80’s and loved it. I had and now have again thin straight hair that no hair spray could help so a perm was the solution!
If i have my hair cut above my shoulders I get a bit of a curl. Hair changes after chemotherapy and we call it ‘the chemo curl’.
Yep, I had mine in early 80's and only ever once, it turned out dry and frizzy I looked like Worzel Gummidge. My hubby also had his permed around the same time - long before I met him.
Yes and I loved mine. Was easiest hair style ever but it’s all the young lads getting them now and must admit some of them really pull them off and look amazing
