Have You Ever Picked up a Hitchhiker?

Ask a Question

We never have in this country but when we are in Lanzarote we always do. It is very common and safe to do there.

No I haven't, but then again I have never seen anyone thumbing a lift. Not sure if I would unless it was a lone woman.

No. I wouldn’t feel safe. There have been times when I have been close to doing it and stopped myself. I’ve heard too many horror stories about it here

PayItForward Its a trust thing both ways. The hitchhiker ‘if normal’ is probably taking a bigger risk. I wouldn’t do it on my own.

Does that even exist here? I've only even known it in America but either way no I wouldn't

Leannexxx I would never do it in the uk but in Lanzarote it is quite the norm. Mainly pick up campers or surfers.

No I haven't and I certainly wouldn't feel safe doing so. I'm sure that the majority are pretty safe but I wouldn't be risking it.

I did once many years ago. It was a Romanian man and he was very nice, I probably gave him a lift for 15-20 miles until his direction branched off from mine. I think I did it for the novelty of doing it and have never done it since. Probably about 15 years ago now.

BonzoBanana We have done it a few times in Lanzarote. It’s me and my husband. Never had any problems.

No never, I've watched too many scary movies to pick hitchhiker's up, they are all serial killers lol

martinlufc5637 It’s only me and husband in the car when we do it. But who says we are not the killers! Mostly young people we pick up, campers or surfers.

eyeballkerry They ought to do a movie where a serial killer couple pick up a serial killer hiker and we watch how it all pans out and who gets the upper hand.

The last time I picked up a hitchhiker would have been over 40 years ago, don't really see it these days anymore.

HEDGEHOGS We only do it in Lanzarote as it is safe. We picked up a couple of young male surfers. We warned them never to do it in the uk. They said they do it all the time in Lanzarote and get picked up pretty quickly.

I've done it twice. In London, It was pouring rain and there was a father & daughter trying to catch a bus but missed it, l stopped and said l was going to ...., it was where they were going so they were very grateful. Second time l was going home to Brighton and just before the motorway was a young lad with a sign "Brighton", we chatted and listened to music all the way, l dropped him off at the pier and off l went. Wouldn't dream of doing it now tho 😊

I would never do it in this country. I used to live in Peacehaven near Brighton and used to see a lot of hitchhikers holding the ‘Brighton‘ sign.
