Would You Ever Put Books on the Shelves with Their Spines Not Showing?
Ask a Question
I watch a lot of property programmes on TV and I have noticed the trend of people displaying books on the shelves with pages facing outwards and it always annoys me as you cant see what the book is.
So my question is, do people do this in real life?
I really hope they don't, what would be the point? You would be constantly searching for the books you wanted.
I do that for books I'm currently reading but that's it, so its only like 2 or 3 books that are reversed on the shelves.
We do, we both read the same things so the ones he's read go spine in and the ones I've read go in side ways. Perhaps its an 'advertising/copyright' thing on the property programmes.
lilyflower I never thought of the copyright issues, that makes sense. I thought it was a style choice
No,no, that would be a nightmare for me..I like looking at my book display, seeing which collections I have x
He he. No not really. Most are in case with spine showing. There are exceptions though. If they are different size, shapes depends how I can fit them and also if they are quite regularly looked at. Some are horizontal with pages facing out. But not the whole bookcase!
I can’t see the point of that but also knock me for this one, I can’t see the point of displaying books. If I have read a book then I will pass it on to family or a charity shop. Any other books such as cook books, information or similar get store away until I need them.
eyeballkerry I like to see books on display, you can see what people like to read and It also depends on space, about 5 years ago we downsized, so had to let go of lots of possessions. We went from 8 bookcases to one. I found it easier to let go as I read fiction, mostly crime, but my husband likes history so his were reference books. Any overflow, he has had to keep in his man cave aka the shed
Absolutely not! Although I use a kindle for bedtime reading of my historical fiction books I do have a large bookcase with cookery books, factual books etc and sometimes lay them on their sides but still with spines outward. I actually don't understand why anyone would do otherwise.
My ocd would never let me do this and how irritating would it be if you were looking for a book and had to pull them all out to find what you were looking for.
I don't see the point in this I like to see the name of the book showing this would really annoy me fair enough doing it with the one you are reading
I wouldn't, I would never be able to find the book that my son wanted to read! I don't see the point in this trend, it doesn't look good.
During lockdown many people bought books by the metre to display as a zoom call backdrop, maybe this trend is an anti zoom movement
I would never do this and it seems crazy how would you find the right book when you wanted it
Maybe they are all charity books brought specially for the TV show to make the house owners look intellectual.
Gosh I think that has to be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen. Take it people in homes like this don’t actually read and this is just for show. Imagine looking for a particular book and having to pull through all that . Think the books would be all over the floor
I'm a neat freak so this would drive me crazy, that said l even keep my books in height order, so l definitely need help...
Pinkspirit That makes sense to me, my husband likes them in genre and then alphabetical, he needs help
beccatavender that definitely makes me feel better that I'm not the only one needing help
