Do You Have a Fireplace?
Ask a Question
With different heating sources available, fireplaces don’t seem to be a thing anymore.
I love the idea of having a fire lit in the winter, but it wouldn’t heat the whole house, so we don’t bother and just put the central heating on.
Do you have a fireplace and use it??
Yeah i have got a fireplace and do use it in the winter as i like a fire. I agree though it doesn’t heat the whole house
jms19 I like sitting by a fire in the winter. It makes you feel so snug. You would need alternative heating for the whole house though
No. We have central heating but have a fake fire place (electric) for aesthetics. Often just put the light on it on without the hot air heater. No chimney as house is newer than that. Otherwise keep warm with blankets, hot water bottles and candles. (I’m careful and we don’t smoke) never leave unattended.
JLouM it’s nice to even have a fake fire to give you that snug feeling. I’m very safety conscious too. I know people that leave candles lit to go to the shop! I would never take the chance
Yeah we have one however the gas was cut off when we had new boiler as bed there from when I came out of hospital. Luckily we hadn’t used so wasn’t a big deal. Will update an get electric instead possibly..
LL81 that’s lucky. Yes, an electric one would even be nice. I have a friend that has a fireplace in each room of her house (it’s an old house). She doesn't light any of them. I said she could even get the electric ones put in
Having an open fire is one of the reasons I love my home. Nowadays it’s just smokeless coal being used. Although I know it doesn’t heat much I still love the coziness of it.
Pjran That sounds really lovely. We have a chimney and could potentially have an open fire but moving soon hopefully.
I have an open flame gas fire but really wish it was just a simple open fireplace so I could burn thing cheaply like wood etc. I went through the whole of last winter without using it once though. I tend to wear a thick hoodie type thing and start the day with exercise on an exercise bike so get really hot in the thick hoody and wouldn't want any additional heating. I'm down in the south west so temperatures can be a little milder than elsewhere but only by a degree or two I guess in winter on average.
I live In an old Victorian property and there Is a fireplace built In. When I moved In I put an electric fire In to fill the gap. The chimney Is blocked by the way. Because of the running costs I no longer use the fire. There Is a gas pipe by the side of the fire too. I inquired about It and to get the chimney unblocked It would of cost a fortune. To cut the story short, I now own a Bioethanol Fire. It Is cheaper and Is equivalent to 2kw. The fuel (Ethanol) Is somewhat expensive but the fire only heats one room. It Is cosy though.
We swapped our old gas fire last year for an electric one. Tho I do prefer the aesthetic of this one it's doesn't heat the room as well.
Yes we have a open fireplace and use it each winter absolutely love it so calming and warming
I miss the open fire as it used to be excellent when I was younger, however now that I live in a new build the open fires are almost non existent these days.
Yes we have one with a log burner, we only use in winter when it's really cold, logs that used to be so cheap ain't anymore though, you cant beat an old fashioned fire
Funny you should mention this, we had our boiler & gas fire serviced recently..
Our Engineer Craig told me that he caps MORE gas fires off now!
We don't have a fireplace unfortunately, we had an open fire when growing up, nothing beats the heat from that.
We are actually having a new radiator on the back wall which will heat our whole house instead of the radiator we have already & we are having our gas fire capped off today at 12pm...
Pjran ..It's just a longer radiator that goes along the length of our back wall. I came home from a long overnight shift, walked home & called to Iceland on my walk home, was absolutely soaked through..
Believe me when this radiator was fitted an hour later I was sat with my back to it on a stool warm as toast!
Local Gas Engineer Craig told me when discussing heating options that a bigger radiator would heat our 3 bedroom house. We have had Craig service our fire & boiler for years, he fitted us a new boiler a few years ago, we trust him.
janphoenix51 I hope Craig is right. We have some large radiators but just one wouldn’t keep me toasty.
There is nothing like the glow that you get from a real fire in a proper fireplace. It is a childhood memory staring into the flames and the Christmas morning feeling. My friend bought a new build house and it has a fake chimney on the roof to make the estate aesthetically pleasing. She wishes it was a real fireplace
Yes. I have a fire and heating, I tend to use the heating in the mornings and fire at nights. I couldn’t be without my fire
