Foul Play Alleged at World Conker Championships

Ask a Question

You could say King Conkers win was bonkers

That was because 82-year-old David Jakins had allegedly used a steel conker hidden in his pocket to 'conquer' the opposition

He was in a good position to abuse the situation as he was also a judge, and this was his first win since 1977

Ok so this scandal is no match for boxing or horse racing fixing for example , but it was certainly a 'blow' for all the honest nutcrackers

I know some kids who used to soak their conkers in vinegar for a few days to make them extra hard

Did you ever partake in this sport when you were younger or know a 'William the 'conk' queror who did ?

Never took part in the conker fights, but I used to collect them. Not a tradition I thought the younger generations took part in

I used to love going to collect conkers when I was a child. Use to put them in the oven to try and make them tougher, not sure it worked 😂

Thing about cheating and winning in any sport is that you always know you did so.I was rubbish at conkers always bruised my fingers and missed 9/10. Image

Jerseydrew I imagine there are a few wagers taken even with these challenges J, so maybe he was just hedging his bets , so to speak

I used to love conker season until it got banned at my school. Some people soaked them in vinegar and others used to bake them in the oven.

A friend in school had his Dad make him a fibreglass conker, with the hole drilled and painted to look like the real thing. Backfired on him though because once word was out nobody would play against him. Haven't thought about that for years until I read this post.
