Game of Thrones - Was It Too Dark?
Other
Did anyone else struggle to see the action in this episode? I know the cinematographer has defended his use of light - or lack of - and says he shot it and, therefore, knows it was fine but I struggled to watch some of it We ended up with the lights off and, even then, we were craning our necks to make out the action on many of the shots. I'm a huge fan so I really enjoyed the plot.
Glad I am not going blind. The picture was awful! I recorded episode 3 at 3 different showings and all were bad, not just the lighting but very unclear and blurry, like watching through a mist. I was so disappointed but don't really accept that explanation. I think the complexity of filming and the expectation meant that it could never fulfil the task of so many different things going on and to be honest I think the 'dark mistiness' was used as camouflage. I just hope the last 3 episodes are better considering they kept us waiting so long for the final series, saying they wanted to get it right so as not to disappoint!
I also thought that the 'darkness' was a way to camouflage the vast number of extras that would've been needed to make this episode. I was a bit miffed that the cinematographer felt that there was absolutely nothing wrong. We are both huge fans and I loved the plot but there were times I wasn't sure who was going to be around for the next episode. Because ACR hasn't seen it I won't mention any names - two in particular look like they won't make it but who knows?
I've only seen one episode of Game of Thrones, and that was in the cinema (season 6, episode 9), so haven't seen these episodes yet - I'm sure I'll eventually buy the complete boxset at some point. But, from what I've read on this there are a large number of people making the same complaint. If you are a Sky customer, apparently - in the UK at least, the version now available on the Sky catch-up service has a much improved bitrate and the picture quality is a big improvement as a result.
Otherwise, you'll have to wait for the Blu-ray release, or better still 4K, to see it properly - When you buy Game of Thrones on Blu-ray, HBO can take advantage of all that storage space on each disc and go easier on the lossy video compression — with no pixelation or ugly artifacting to speak of. For some people, the quick-moving scenes in “The Long Night” got bad enough that it almost felt like they were watching a GIF, but that’s not a worry with home media.
Thank you ACR I really would like to see some of the scenes again because they were so poor. Imagine a black tv screen with a couple of dirty coloured short lines - not shapes - moving. Some of the scenes were amazing but there was so much unrecognisable action that we felt a bit cheated.
Ooooooh! Thanks sarahcrouch I didn't even think that I had the power to improve the quality of this episode - I thought Cinema mode was just for sound. I will certainly have a go.
I haven't watched any of the game of thrones. I just don’t understand the excitement surrounding it. Probably shouldn’t pass judgement until I’ve forced myself to view and episode but it just really doesn't appeal to me.
I am not into fantasy usually but it is more of an ancient squabble between families. There are 'houses', Lannister, Stark, Greyjoy etc just as in our own history we have the house of Lancaster, York, Stuarts etc right up to our current Windsors.
There are 7 Kingdoms all vying for top dog but if you don't like history melded with fantasy then you won't like it. However, I feel it needs at least a 3 episode watch in order to get into it and like every show there are characters you love and hate. It is very Machiavellian.
I'm all for atmospheric scenes to set the danger and fear of the piece (as said earlier we agree that cgi needed to be dark to create the hoards needed) but to have to watch it in the dark in a domestic setting was not comfortable.
No!!!!!! She clearly had to keep awake with caffeine with all that darkness. I wonder if they will edit......
I have just watched episode 4 and enjoyed it more than the previous 3 so hope they keep up the standard for the final two. There have been a few times when I have gone off Daenerys, especially when she burned the father and son (Billy Bones from Black Sails), but I really hate her now and hope she gets her comeuppance!
Haha - you do realise she will turn into a mad Queen like her ancestors........ oooh! that look on her face at the castle wall said it all.
Had to resurrect this after just watching episode 5. I was prepared to be disappointed having read all the criticisms and complaints in the news but tbh it blew me away. This time the final battle was in daylight, if you can call it a battle, more like annihilation.
Yes there have been a few c*ck ups in series 8, but overall it seems to be playing out well.
You were spot on with queenie angemski but we saw it coming. She proved she had no heart way back when she burned the witch and watched her brother die such an appalling death. I know he was about as bad as a Targeryan can get but come on! Not even a flicker of emotion?
I am now routing for her to get her comeuppance and am getting a bit fed up with Jon being so weak, he needs to up his game, open his eyes. It's one thing to have a wicked ruler but a weak one is just as bad.
Lynibis OMW What a corker! I honestly didn't think she would do what she did though. (being careful about spoilers - some people watch a day later. lol) Every character had a significant piece to play in this episode. I'm not trusting what I saw totally........have we lost some characters? are we sure? We'll see. I agree that I was totally behind Queenie and her previous intentions but the girl has got to go! Jon will man up, I'm sure, but his loyalty is unfailing. I see greater things for Tyrion. Can't wait for the next one.
angemski I can't wait either but at same time don't want it to arrive, it will be like losing an old friend. I am going to wait a year or so and then buy all 8 box sets to keep beside my G.O.T calligraphy set. You may have seen on a previous thread that I won a set with seal, wax, quills, paper and ink, along with a set of the G.O.T. stamps, and picture postcards A4 size. I will get them framed eventually and they can hang alongside my framed prints of Vikings, Black Sails and Outlander lol. Btw did you see the tv and Outlander box sets posted on comps today? I entered the coffee machine comp you posted.
Love the got shuffle gif!
Lynibis You're bringing out the gif in me. Now this is a little spooky - I have wax, seals and calligraphy nibs too but not so grand as yours. (I use them regularly for treasure maps - nothing like breaking a wax seal to convince a child it's going to be an adventure) No I didn't notice anything in the comps but will definitely go back and have a go. I really don't want G.O.T. to finish either but, hopefully, there will be something else to capture our attention in the future.
Lynibis The treasure map works well to stimulate and, let's be honest, occupy children. Standard format - thick paper, ripped around the perimeter to give it some tattiness, painted over with a wet tea bag or coffee grounds and left to dry. Draw out the map using directions, footprints/arrows and an end location with a huge 'X'. It has to be 'eased' into a rolled up diploma shape and tied with ribbon and a wax seal. It does help if you have a mini treasure chest to find. Hours of fun.
Hi angemski. Just wondered if you were a fan of the John Wick films. I know I shouldn't be, a) they are not historical! and b) they are full of violence, but hey ho................
Anyway the reason I am commenting on here is because I have just watched a trailer for John Wick 3 and (you may already know) Jerome Flynn is in it! Seemed strange seeing him in a suit lol.
Lynibis I love John Wick! I will be watching at the earliest opportunity. A lot of people say his acting is a bit wooden but I've always thought he does, what he does, well. I loved Keanu in 'The Lake House' and he was pretty convincing in 'Knock, Knock'. Perhaps I am biased about him because he doesn't seek publicity and leads a very quiet life. (although he is so celebrety-shy that recent Graham Norton interview was not good! lol) Lynibis Oh dear! I am having one of those days - rambled on and didn't even address the Jerome Flynn comment. Apologies. I think he is a reliable actor - can understand that he needed to escape after all the Soldier, Soldier and singing fame but glad he's back. Very believable in Ripper Street too.
angemski gosh yes, I loved ripper street but also because I love Matthew McFadyen who first came to my attention in Pillars of the Earth, the mini series of the book by Ken Follett, another good one to add to your reading list if you haven't read it already. Ian McShane, Donald Sutherland, Eddie Redmayne.....wow love it.
No no no............I am absolutely bereft. I can't believe Game of Thrones has gone from my life forever. I could not have imagined a better ending all except for poor Jon Snow. I hated Greyworm by the end and think he should have come in and seen his queen slain and as he went forward Jon should have backed away and Greyworm got incinerated!!!! Oh well, I always felt Tyrion would come through it but didn't think Bran would be king.
I have to admit to being a little disappointed and it seemed as though the ending had been rushed. Wrong ending for Jon Snow - his true lineage should have been shared. Might have to watch it again just in case I was expecting too much the first time of watching. Will miss it.
angemski maybe they felt broadcasting their incest was a bit over the top lol. I am watching throne cast and it is good to talk as they say.
Well, it's down to Outlander to now fulfil my viewing needs but still a long wait to the next series. Am re-watching Vikings at the moment and it fills a void.
