What Are the Experiences with Endoscopy?

Was wondering if anyone here had a camera put down their throat or know someone that has. How did everything go. Just a bit nervous about the procedure .
Not had it personally but i know loads of people who have. It is a routine procedure and they do it hundreds of times a year so will be fine. It is a little uncomfortable though from what I’m told
Yes I had it a few years ago. I assume you have been offered a sedative which will relax your gagging reflex. Mine is really bad but I couldn't have it as I was driving myself there and back. But I assure you it is not painful though I won't lie and say it's a breeze, though I am sure it would have been nicer with the sedative.
Lynibis lol. Sounds very nerve racking though. Mums getting it done Sunday, she's scared and I'm getting so worried. My uncle had it done and my cousin always said that the camera made him weaker and caused his death. So think we're scared for that reason.

SalmaS let's put it this way my dear....I would sooner have that than a trip to the dentist. In this day and age no one is made to suffer during a medical procedure so with huge respect I have to say your cousin is wrong. The worst that can happen is a sore dry throat for a little while after.
Lynibis I totally agree with you about the dentist. I have some fears in my life but the dentist is top of my list. Absolutely hate it.
eyeballkerry I think dentists underestimate how many people feel as we do and I have rarely seen a dentist who makes the effort to put you at ease. Just going for a check up unnerves me probably cos I am worried about what will need doing.
Lynibis I have never had a filling, so pretty lucky with that but just hate when you have to keep your mouth open and feel yourself choking.
eyeballkerry I truly believe that many dentists do unnecessary work. I have had fillings throughout my life and a very bad experience in the chair when I was a child. However, I have had about 4 root canals and every single one got severely infected after and so the tooth had to come out each time. I have no teeth at all bottom left but have no trouble eating. About 20 years ago I had a sensitive front tooth and was told it needed root canal, I refused and to this day it is still there and giving me no trouble. A back molar was meant to come out a few years back and although it is badly discoloured it does not show and again, it gives me no trouble whatsoever. I have lost faith in the profession, as I have with so many others these days.
I’ve had this done 4 times. There’s nothing to worry about and the nurse lets you hold her hand if nervous. They spray your throat with a banana tasting spray and it doesn’t take the doctors long to put the camera down. Hope this helps you.
I had it many years ago without sedation as I was pregnant at the time. It was uncomfortable but not painful and was over fairly quick. I hope it goes ok for your mum.
My husband had one when he was diagnosed coeliac. He was absolutely fine and didn’t even have a sedative. Now he can’t even take solid tablets! There is a nurse with you and the Consultant. As long as you do what they tell you and when it will be fine. They are professional and know what they are doing.
SalmaS No it’s just him. He’s never been able to take them and usually takes children syrup liquid painkillers. Recently he can take vitamin tablets though. No nothing to do with procedure at all but if he can do it anyone can! He had 2 or 3 endoscopies and was absolutely fine, maybe just slightly uncomfortable but nothing to worry about and over with very quickly.
I was expecting an endoscopy but the consultant did a nasal endoscopy. No pain killers or relaxant, bl**dy uncomfortable! Trying not to be sick. I wish I’d refused But the waiting room was full so he did a quick job.
I had one done a couple of years ago. Unfortunately did not go smoothly but I was ok. They sedated me but during the procedure, unbeknown to me, I pulled the tube out. When I came round they said they couldn’t do and I had to go back another day. I had the second one done and everything was fine. I do not remember anything from either.
I had a camera down my throat a few years ago, I was really nervous about it. But it was all over in a couple of minutes. I had nothing to worry about.
I had one a few years ago. They gave me the throat spray but I was still struggling to swallow the tube down and started panicking so told me they would give me conscious sedation, with the warning that I might forget what happened afterwards. And truth be told, I did forget - isn't medication so brilliant?! And of course it was done with no problem in the end.
Yes had an endoscopy a few months back, you have the option of either being sedated or having a local anaesthetic numbing agent sprayed at the back of your throat. I went for the spray option as you get the procedure done alot quicker (jump the queue) Not a nice procedure but you get the results back straight away and you start to feel better after a few days.

This is a regular procedure if doctor could not exactly identify the problem in ENT or stomach. All for good if they do
. They have referred her to nasal endoscopy now. Don't think mums going to do it though. .
I had it about 6 years, everything was fine, it was easier than I expected, I did throw up though when they pulled the tube out lol, a colonoscopy is a different matter, never again.

Take the sedation. It over before you know it. Any questions for the nurse consultant write them down. No medical procedure is a pleasant experience because the intention is to examine & assess however; be grateful you live in a country that has a system that affords you preventative medical treatment and that will also change your outlook. Take a friend for comfort and support.
