Do You Still Have Halloween Traditions?
Ask a Question
I don’t know if it’s just me. But my niece was talking about halloween and saying how excited she was to go to her friends Halloween party (her friend has had a party the last few years).
I asked what games they played. She looked at me confused and said they don’t play games. They have music on to dance to, then they go Halloween rhyming.
I told her when I was young we used to bob for apples, try and find the £1 in the apple pie, do a mummy wrap etc. Have these games disappeared over the years?
Jerseydrew the games are brilliant fun. The old games seem to be disappearing though as not many people play them anymore ghost
I was going to say that it's an American tradition but it's actually Irish and Scottish immigrants who took it to the USA. Every day is a school day
'Celebrated in Ireland and Scotland for centuries, Irish and Scottish immigrants took many Halloween customs to North America in the 19th century, and then through American influence various Halloween customs spread to other countries by the late 20th and early 21st century.'
SebK84 yes! And yet the Americans go really big at Halloween while it’s dwindling out here lol
suevernon1968 yes. I don’t think anyone does this anymore though. I certainly haven’t had anyone round collecting lol
We don't celebrate Halloween. We don't like it and our son isn't bothered about it. He has dressed up for parties before at nursery but he wasn't bothered about any of the Halloween decorations or the games.
MrsCraig it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I always loved bobbing for apples and stuffing my face with apple pie. My grandmother made the best apple pie in the country lol
PayItForward when I was younger we used to get dressed up, go round the neighbours houses and tell them a joke or sing song etc to get our treat. I never really enjoyed doing it. Went to Halloween parties when I was a teenager and they were slightly better but still not my thing. I enjoyed bobbing for apples but that was it. We don't discourage our son from celebrating it and if he wanted to would go all out for him but he just isn't interested.
We used to make a guy for the bonfire night fire, penny for the guy was to collect money for the fireworks, the 31st of October was mischief night not Halloween as it is celebrated now.
Auntielettie I have Halloween rhymers calling every night from around the 20th October. They are wee chancers now lol.
Leannexxx sometimes that’s the best way. Ive seen horror stories about kids being given sweets with foreign objects in them . some people are sick
We end up buying the sweet on offer every supermarket, no one comes so I end up sadly having to eat them sometimes put them outside, but seems to be houses with pumpkins etc.. gave that up as so much mess and left with rotten pumpkin
LL81 you can’t let them go to waste
I agree with you on the pumpkin carving - it is so messy I don’t bother anymore myself
We have a few decorations and younger kids still go trick or treating, no bobbing the apples ect... though
martinlufc5637 it’s not that hygienic when you think about it - everyone’s slobbers floating around the water. I always loved bobbing for apples, but I think back now and I’m like lol
PayItForward yeah it's probably why I was always sick as a kid lol , I'm in Turkey on holiday 45C and I'm full of cold lol
We used to make a Guy Fawkes out of our old clothes, add a mask & stand outside the entrance to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield which was just across from our council estate..
The always got quite a bit of money which would be shared between us, we would buy Fireworks for our bonfire & the guy would have pride of place on top!
PayItForward ..
That's how it used to be when I was growing up, if it wasn't the hospital, we were outside the local pub up the road, we were always polite & people were always generous.
As an adult when I saw kids with their guys I always stopped & gave them money & praised their efforts as some guys were fantastic!
I buy lots of sweets for Halloween, but the only person to come over these days is the little Muslim lad from next door, I used to dress in black, wear my witches hat & take my little black cat with me when the doorbell rang with the neighbourhood children years ago, our daughter would be dressed up too handing sweets out but we never took her Halloweening only to special parties or to relatives homes for the occasion...
My son’s best mate comes round to mine every Halloween without fail and brings his sons with him to scare me and get a bucket of sweets. It means so much to me (and him I think) as I lost my son 7 years ago aged 27.
reannsgran Awh this is so sweet I’m sorry for your loss. Your sons friend sounds fantastic
PayItForward Thank you. He is a lovely lad/man. My son and him used to get up to all sorts of high jinx when they were growing up, most of which I never knew at the time.
reannsgran ...So sad, such a young age too..It's good to hear your son's best mate comes to visit with his son, you will all benefit from the friendship you have formed with each other.
Take care..x
janphoenix51 to be honest all of his mates still pop round. They all grew up together in our little village. They look like a bunch of lunatics but they are the nicest bunch of lads…. Well men now !
Thank you
reannsgran ...You are welcome, it's nice that all his friends pop around to visit you, your son obviously meant a lot to his friends & they do to you...
