Hungry Snails Force Closure of Royal Mail Postbox

In the News

No its not April 1st , but you might think it might be after reading this headline

We all know the mail can be slow to reach us , known as snail mail, but these snails are not so slow when it comes to feasting on our mail

That's what's been happening at this post box in Adderstone, Northumberland, where they have been crawling through the flap to devour the envelopes

In fact they have caused so much damage to them the Royal Mail have been forced to put a temporary 'out of use' notice on the post box

The problem is the snails like to eat the paper as is contains cellulose , that gives them energy, besides containing calcium that they use to construct their shells

It seems this post box is also popular with thieves , it was stolen last year and only recently replaced

Maybe it was someone of French descendancy , after all, snails are a delicacy there ?

The residents are not happy as they depended more on this post box to despatch their mail

Lets hope it gets re - instated, and not at a snails pace

It seems this problem is not confined to Adderstone though , it has also been happening in Lewdown, Devon, where the snails have taken a liking to the glue

But they have not closed the postbox, just put up a notice warning people their letters could be a bit nibbled around the edges

That's hilarious to read. OK not funny for the post office or residents but still funny that snails are doing this. The thieves is disgusting.

Jerseydrew I believe there are some snobby snails out there, they will only dine on first class letters and not second class 😉

Regarding the thieves ,

My nephew for some reason loves these gross bugs, I can't stand them.

"snails are a delicacy there"

Snails are a snack in various countries and I tried them when abroad, but didn't like it and the thought I was eating snails didn't help. Nope.

PhilipMarc I had some when camping in the south of france P when younger , just tried them out of curiosity with some frozen frogs legs

The snails were from a local supermarket and in a can and cooked over a calor gas stove

They were vile, but then i suppose cooked with garlic in a restaurant they would probably taste better

The frogs legs were ok , just like eating chicken with a slight fishy taste , but lacking meat unlike a chicken leg
