Incandescent Light Bulbs to Be Banned from the U.S. Starting August 1st

In the News

A Biden administration ban on incandescent lights bulbs starts Aug. 1. On that day, Americans will only be able to purchase LED lights from retailers due to Department of Energy requirements that manufacturers only make and sell energy-efficient light emitting diode, or LED, light bulbs. LED bulbs, while more expensive, last 25-50 times longer and use less electricity.

The switch means were incandescent or halogen incandescent – which accounted for roughly 30% of light bulbs sold in the U.S. in 2020 – will soon be a thing of the past. And while retailers won’t be allowed to sell the bulbs, there are no prohibitions stopping from people using bulbs they currently own.

Ban? That should be up to a person's personal choice which light bulb to buy.

Now, I'll admit I do use LED bulbs practically everywhere as they're cheaper and save energy, but it's just weird to ban a specific type of a bulb. People don't like being told what they can't have.

First it's the U.S., then the rest of the West does the same.

Jerseydrew If it's about the environment we'd all be using solar powered lights, but the problem is that if you don't get sun or too much of it then it's not going to last very long.

What are they going to ban next, candles? That's extremely useful and essential when electricity is down or you're out somewhere where there's no lights.

It is annoying but its a bit of a no brainer really. Unless they do actually stop their sale then people will still use them. Of course its easier for governments to make these little changes in the name of the environment and hope we dont notice the other policies that continue to harm the environment.
