I've Only Gone & Boight An Air Fryer! Any Tips?
Ask a Question
After years of telling MrsChimp that I'd never buy an air fryer because it was a fad, last night I went and bought an air fryer after watching a programme about them on C4.
What have I done? Am I going to regret this?
My chips better be crispy or I'm going to have a fit.
Does anyone have any tips?
Everything cooks much faster in an air fryer so lower the temperature by about 20°C for whatever it says on the packet (or use the fan temp as a guide) and check your food regularly.
Don’t use those frylight sprays as they contain nasty ingredients that can ruin the nonstick coating. I just use a sprayer I bought from Amazon and fill it with regular oil. Hardly use any.
There are air fryer groups on Facebook which are very helpful to ask for tips or just get inspiration. I was on the Ninja one as that’s the brand I have but really the same applies to them all.
snoogans888 Thanks for the advice. I was going to go out and buy one of those frylight sprays. I'm glad I posted this now
snoogans888 that's a really good bit of advice re those spray oils, I had no idea. I shall do as you suggest as there is a ring of burned on stuff round mine even though it goes in dishwasher after every use. Even a gentle scouring won't shift it.
Lynibis and TheChimp this is the reason those sprays are bad:
It contains lecithin (an emulsifier), dimethyl silicone (an anti-foaming agent), and a propellant. The droplets have a low smoke point and the lecithin will start to build up onto your basket, resulting in a sticky spot. This sticky spot is hard to remove and can degrade the coating so that the nonstick surface no longer does its job.
snoogans888 I wish things like this were common knowledge, i feel as if I want a new air fryer now. It's annoying that they actually tell you to use those sprays.
I have resisted thus far but it's looming. Guess even us dinosaurs have to surrender on occasion.Enjoy yer chips won't yer.
MelissaLee1 and nina090976 I am a dinosaur plus and I love mine. Hardly ever use the oven now. Leannexxx I use mine for oven chips and they are delicious, fluffy inside, crisp outside, always shaken half way through cooking.....yum.
Ladies, I use mine practically every day and it's brill for jacket potatoes, sausages (or any meat) sausage rolls. I made Apple turnovers in mine with a packet of puff pastry and a jar of apple. You won't regret getting one.
MelissaLee1 I was the same till my chef cousin told me he uses his every night . I cook 90% of my meals in it
I loved cooking peri peri chicken in mine I think there great for meats but honestly didn't like chips done in the air fryer as they are like oven chips
I refused to buy an AirFryer as I also thought it would be a fad then had a change of heart when they were on sale. I can honestly say that I've never looked back. No waiting for the oven to heat up, everything cooks quicker but it did take a bit of time to work out how to cook some things in it. Invest in a good air fryer recipe book or even better follow an Instagram account like BoredofLunch for ideas.
I cook potato wedges In mine Instead of chips and they taste lovely. Try this; Cut some potatoes Into wedges. Wash them then dry them out. In a bowl add olive oil, onion powder or granules, garlic power or granules and paprika. Mix well, then lay them out In a tray. Cook for 20 min and turn over at half way on 200 c. For the dipping sauce add tomato ketchup with Cholula Chipotle Mexican Hot Sauce. Buy some air fry liners. Saves on the cleaning.
I've an air Fryer got it as an Xmas gift. Haven't used it yet. Going to experiment with mine
