Jailed for Running out on Restaurant Bill?
Ask a Question
Should dine and dashers be jailed?
A married couple has been accruing unpaid bills of over £1000 from restaurants! But is imprisonment an appropriate punishment for skipping out on the check?

Look on the bright side, at least they will get three meals a day and free accommodation. I think the judge probably made an example of them as this is becoming a bit of a trend. As they say, no such thing as a free lunch.
EmmaWright762 I fail to understand why they were even convicted in the first place. A pointless example of a judge bowing to social media publicity. A community service would of being a better punishment.
jam45 I think it may be because the government can not collect tax on money that is not paid to the restaurant.
Yes, and pretty sure in other countries there were customers who tried that and got the crap beaten out of them.
It's a business, not a charity.
Dig a hole put them in there and put a grill on top - bread and water only. they can live in their own slop
Not sure a custodial sentence was in order here , losses were around £1000 apparently, but how much tax payers money to keep these people in jail will be spent, considerably more than £1000
Fancy using your kids to rob restaurants.
Yes, good enough for them. Enjoy prison food for a while
I think it definitely is an appropriate punishment for the crime, they stole over £1000 from the people who own those restaurants so why shouldn't they go to jail like any other thief would.
They should have had financial assets seized, perhaps a big fine of £20k and if they can't pay it then the value is removed from the value of their property i.e. a forced sale or perhaps from their pension pot or even state pension. Financial crimes would be much better punished with a larger financial punishment. However they should also have a much greater punishment or fine if they repeat offend.
jam45 Yes of course punished for stealing food, punished for any theft basically and this wasn't a loaf of bread and box of eggs it was expensive restaurant meals. I'm sure if someone came into their home and started removing their belongings because they wanted them they would object to it and feel it was unfair.
Make them do community service, at least they’ll be forced into giving back something without the huge cost to taxpayers while in jail.
They should have been made to wash dishes in each restaurant they stole from for at least a year , better than sending them to butlins prison camp and still getting fed for free
Lynibis Which is why this subject is even being brought up in the first place. You have no foresight or pattern recognition. Stop commenting on things you aren't qualified to.
jamesrobertkerr There are plenty of ethnic miniorities in Jail. However some ethnic miniorities don't really commit much crime like the Chinese or Indians and are below the national average for crime and other ethnic minorities are above the average. I totally agree that in some areas the police seem to have a far too careful approach to crime commited by ethnic minorities especially child grooming etc by gangs.
