Jury Service: What's Your Experience?
Ask a Question
Hey everyone,
I start Jury Service next week and was wondering what everyone's experiences were. I know you cant tell me what cases you did or anything that was said or done. I just want to know if you enjoyed the experience or not and would you do it again.
I have been called for jury service twice S, but many years ago
I enjoyed the experiences both times, getting paid leave from work with expenses from the court on both occasions two weeks for the first , the other only lasted 3 days but still got paid
One was a serious case and the other not so
I am not sure if things have changed since then but you had to attend when called unless you had a valid reason not to and your employer has to let you go by law
I was lucky the chosen jury on both occasions were friendly and fairly intelligent but it is just the luck of the draw so to speak
telmel thanks for replying. Everyone I have spoke to so far has said that they have enjoyed it. I'm probably worrying too much, ill probs be fine.
SarahfromLeeds Yes it is a great experience to be part of a real trial rather than just watching one on TV, and you get a good feeling when making a decision that could possibly help send a criminal to jail where they have hurt a third party innocent
I think “enjoy“ depends on the type of case you’re expected to juror on. You have no choice so try not to worry about it. What will be will be.
I was called several years ago and I did not want to go, but I did. I did not know what to expect either. It was OK. I got paid for Parking, my Lunch and obviously my time off Work. It can last anything from 1 day to a few. Mine was over 2 days. When I went after listening to the Crime you are escorted to a room where you can talk about It. There was a nominated person when I went. He was part of the group. Maybe he opted to be that speaker, who knows. We all had to agree on the same verdict before we left the room. That Is what I can remember. I wouldn't want to be called again because It Is something that Is not me. I went because I had too. I hope yours will be good. Things these days are probably different compared to when I went. Good luck.
I've been called up twice first time I was pregnant and I couldn't sit there all day and second time I got food poisoning so only did one day my dad's done it twice too and he said he wouldn't do it again because of the last case he got my advice take something to read you could be there every day waiting and don't get picked for it
I have always wanted to do jury service and I do wonder how they choose jurors as I have never been called. Mind you I wouldn't get paid as I am self employed!
Lynibis Yes you would get paid, im self employed and just had to tell them my loss of earnings
I’ve done it twice and I do think it was a worthwhile experience.
Both my cases were very different. The first one was quite frustrating though as we couldn’t come to a quick agreement on verdict so it was a lot of back and forth. You could tell some people didn’t want to be there and didn’t take it seriously.
The second one we agreed very quickly.
Definitely take a book or something to do as there is some waiting around if you don’t get put on a case.
Some days were great as you didn’t get put on a case or could leave early!
I've never been called up for jusry service but my partner has and enjoyed the case he was on.
I got called up about 8 years ago, my son was only a few weeks old so I appealed not to go on the grounds I has a newborn, no transport back then so I would have to get trains etc. They allowed me to miss it.
My brother in law did it and it was a horrible case apparently, lasted a couple of weeks and he struggled for a long time mentally afterwards (from evidence he'd seen/heard etc) - he said he'd never do it again.
Been called up 2times in 5 years but as I'm a carer for my disabled son and almost deaf I couldn't attend
Been called up twice,, first case was to do with a Boxing family in Barnsley & a intruder, it lasted a few weeks, I remember a male Juror just wanting to get it all over with so was just going along with the majority!
The second case was a few years ago & was similar case which actually took place about 1.5 mile from where I live...
Take a good book or a few. I know someone that went through 3 books in one week. A lot of waiting around. Don't worry if you are never called up or if you only get called up for a few days whilst you are there.
Lots of waiting around, but worth it when you get on a trial, I enjoyed it and was even forwowan . Second time I was called I couldn’t attend.
I've been called 5 times 3 times The Old Bailey once T Southwark once at Snaresbrook I only served 3 times I enjoyed it
I've been called up once but can't go as I've got Agoraphobia. It's not something I'd want to do if I could I think it would have a negative effect on my mental health.
I've been twice and enjoyed each case. The Clerk of court makes sure you know all the information.Rest assured you will enjoy .
I was summoned for the first time and finished my service last week.
It was definitely an interesting experience, but there is a lot of waiting around, so do bring some devices or books to occupy yourself during these times.
I don't think saying I enjoyed it would be the right thing to say, but I would definitely do it again given the opportunity.
Don't get nervous about it, everything is explained, and the chances are pretty much 50/50 as to whether you still get chosen in the court room, I didn't get childcare costs back, so could be potentially worse off as well. It is interesting but if I had a choice it felt like a lot of wasted time.
My experience was disappointing. It was a very short case and did not take long. Should have been dealt with at Magistrates Court but the accuser wanted to be tried by Jury! It was all the waiting around which was boring. Had to be checked that you were not known to the accused. It was many years ago but I dont think it has changed very much.
I did jury service about 20yrs ago & I loved it. It was an experience being in the jury & watching an actual trial. It wasn't a big trial but the Louise Woodwood case was also being heard in another courtroom so there were a lot of press & tv cameras around. I also became friends with another member of the jury I was in & I am still friends with her now. Neither of us have been called up again though.xx
Got the call up just once had to wait in a room before they called you but you had to phone in every night to see if your name was on the list then you went in but they paid a good expenses package petrol lunch etc.
You get to see how they law system works and how the hell some cases ever get to court.
I worried like you, but when I did it I enjoyed every minute of it and met a lovely group of people, some who I still keep in touch with.
Plus you get paid for it
I would love to do it again.
Hope you enjoy
Take a book as there could be a lot of waiting around, especially if you're not chosen to go into court on your first day. (They have about 40/50 people turn up & so many are selected per hearing) if you're not selected then it'll be boring as you have to hand your mobile in.
