Just Stop Oil Protesters

In the News

I understand the threat to the environment but what are your views on the way these protesters are going about it? Personally I think they are getting most peoples’ backs up and less likely to get support. They think they are the soffragetts from a bygone age. I don’t think it will work the same today. They stop people getting to work, hospitals, doctors etc. There argument is they have tried other methods already. Well I think this method is totally counter productive now.

Can never quite make my mind up , especially when historians are divided about the suffragettes and the campaign then.... trouble is government is not doing anything much about climate change, how would you go about it and get support....I notice all the petition I sign online only get the support of thousands...

Sarahvwomble I don’t really know the answer, it’s a complex subject. I just feel this isn’t actually changing anything either just really annoying most people and disrupting their lives. Complete turn off for support. That is my opinion.

Although I agree with a lot of what they are trying to tell us...all the protests at the moment are just peeing me off! Completely going about things the wrong way.

When they blocked the roads, people said they are stopping people getting to hospital, then they said they let ambulances through or you could take another route... These days we have to get ourselves to hospital it is usually quicker, hospital staff would be driving in their own vehicles, someone could be visiting a dying relative and could miss their opportunity because they were blocking the way. Plus the alternate routes would be much busier. Absolutely disgusting.

Throwing the coloured powder just ruins events too, it could mean that the event has to be postponed or moved, meaning more unnecessary costs and travel.

When they poured all the milk out, that is someone's property and that would have meant that those cows and the making of the milk they poured out would have been a huge waste, they even blocked the fridges where people were buying milk, but they blocked all the vegan milk alternatives and things too. Completely defeating the point.

They need to educate people, get the word out. Send the people that can do something the information too, not bully those that can't do much or sometimes those that are doing their bit!

Also if you ask some of them how to fix they issues they are coming across, they don't all have an answer. How about suggest solutions, rather than just join in because other people are doing it.

If they came up with decent solutions, I would spread the information far and wide.

DeBunny I agree entirely and have always said they are targeting the wrong people. Those who have no ability or authority to do anything except their own small contributions.

I'm actually unsure what they are campaigning for. Yes they are against global warming but what are their policies and what do they expect us to do? What have they come up with to help the environment that we need to do? Seems like they have a very simplistic approach of annoying everyone about global warming and I guess while the environment declines over the following decades they will be there to protest about it. Whatever politicians do probably won't be enough anyway so they keep protesting.

The problem is if they didn’t do these stunts that get headlines then no one would really care. I get that they’re annoying people but i respect that they are willing to do extreme things to get their message across (as long as no one is harmed ofc)

jms19 I don’t respect them though. They are just criminals. They deface things of value and stopping people get to hospital is not harmless.

JLouM Yeah i definitely get where you're coming from and agree about the hospital point. However history has shown time and time again that to bring about change extreme actions are required. The environment is a very serious concern so I understand why they are going to the lengths they are.

Wait, wait, wait. Didn't you read in The Metro newspaper that China, India, Russia and the USA are not reducing or taking any notice of climate changes? So why should I?

I agree with their aims - but dont think they are really helping that much as its just annoying people - but then people should be annoyed that not enough is being done for climate change. The govt is so busy trying hard to remove peoples right to legitimate protest I can understand why they protesters are getting more desperate. If it annoys the Daily Mail then I am all for it.

So how do you stop oil then and the alternative? What is the answer?

I suppose they would rather that the oil/energy that we pay for increases in price exponentially until we all implode? They need to think about what they are asking, who they are actually affecting and what the alternatives are.

It's really hard. They have tried so hard to get the government to listen and make changes. We need to do something about the environment

Strange how when there is a protest of some reason going on, people always have concerns and point out about people being delayed getting to work, hospital/doctors appointments etc. Yet when there is a motor vehicle crash that closes a road or roads for hours on end and also people are stuck in traffic jams for hours, it never gets mentioned....

Carlton1512 These days it is quite common to see roads closed by the police which I think they do all too often, mind you around here they even close roads completely for a couple of months because they are building houses and need to put all the services in! Astonishing! On the plus side, on our detour we found a lovely pub that we hadn't known about.

I fully understand the cause however there means are flawed, take this weekend, they are expected to pull a stunt at the F1, on the face of it it make sense, gas guzzling, emission emiting industry ect, but when you think about it if there was no F1 there wud be no formula e, and it's the formula e guys who will invent the green technologies of the future that will filter down to everyday cars just like it did with formula 1, such as air breaks, power steering, engine efficiencys ect

I think for the most part that they're less likely to get support and maybe arrested but they also raise awareness on certain issues by protesting and end up in the news cycle. Certain actions are wholly irresponsible, like blocking roads so that people going to hospital are delayed.
