Should Kids Be Taught How to Grow Fruit & Veg!
Ask a Question
Should we teach kids about Gardening and growing their own fruit and veg in school?
Growing things like your own potatoes, onions, tomatoes, carrots and strawberries is not only great tasting, but teaching a valuable life skill.
yeh why not. its a good skill to have and teaches them to be outside more rather than stuck inside watching screens. Anything in nature is good.
SaveMeSunday they have an Allotment at my daughters school which is such a great thing - would be great for more to have it
Yes, they should definitely be taught how to grow fruit & veg and also how to cook them afterwards.
100% they should, it’s good for us to know where our food comes from. On top of that it would encourage healthy eating
I can remember growing potatoes and tomatoes green beans when I was a kid never did it with my kids but have bought a greenhouse will deffo be growing our own as I believe all this crop spaying and things
It’s a life skill and yes we should all be growing our own veg and fruit or fruit and veg lol I can remember putting the potatoes with roots in a big hole and digging them up was amazing strawberries carrots no chemicals green beans nothing more beautiful than watching something grow flower and turn into a fruit or vegetable even if u just have a small piece of garden doesn’t have to even be a garden anymore does it everything is so easy these days but seems so hard I mean shop bought fruit and veg doesn’t last like it used to and the earth is so hot bet we could grow bananas coconuts alsorts with the changes to the climate sorry for the ramble but thanks
Yes, absolutely, great skill to learn and very exciting for little ones when it comes to harvesting the fruit&vegetables. We are growing tomatoes this year, like every year obsessed with them, they do taste so much better than the shop bought ones x
It should be integral part in society parents and teacher should teach & should give awareness of growing your own vegetables & fruits the only problem is alot of kids dont have their own garden as the kind of society we live in where houses have become so compact or in flats but still they should be able to grow In pots
100% they should be taught this in school. I used to love growing my own salad stuff when I was a kid & still do now
TriceParsons I loved gardening right from a young age and when i got older, growing my own veg
SamGoodship - No. That is for trained and experienced farmers and their staff to do for a living.
Yes, my 11 year old grandson started doing this two years ago and loves it. He started off just growing tomatoes but now he grows lettuce, peppers, strawberries, different flowers and only 2 wks ago he told me he’s trying to go kiwi (which I didn’t know grow on a tree r that u could grow them here) but they will take 2/3 yrs before he gets his 1st fruit but he gets so excited and enjoys it so much
So where are we supposed to going to grow these vegetables and fruits?
We're lucky because we have a garden to do it, but most people don't.
It's a lot cheaper to just buy from the supermarket if you take everything into account.
I went to boarding school where this was an option and was appreciated by some at the school a couple of whom actually went into the farming industry. (It was in a very rural location!). Any practical skill that children can learn is a benefit over and above just learning to pass exams.
I think they should bring back cooking in schools too I'm not sure if it's all schools but they stopped doing it in school near me grow your own food and cook it kids would love it and it's a life skill there gonna need yes parent should do it too but there's alot of children that don't get that chance to
Yes, absolutely. I grow things with my children every year. I think it's really important they understand where food comes.
