I am a great believer in new ways not necessarily being good and old ways not necessarily being bad. What happened to the days when kids got 1 big present (if they were lucky) and maybe a stocking filled with satsumas, nuts, chocolate and small gifts? That when they opened a present they truly did not know what it would be, even though they had dropped lots of hints during the previous couple of months. That they were actually grateful for what they got and did not selfishly give mum and dad a shopping list of the things they wanted no matter what the cost, giving poorer parents their biggest headache of the year.

I have seen and heard of so many kids getting what they insisted they wanted, without thought or real desire, only to leave them unused after a quick go on Christmas Day. Why have we stopped teaching children to be grateful, to understand that it is better to give than to receive and most of all what Christmas actually means, whether you are religious or not. I am not sure Christmas should be celebrated at all by those who have no faith in God as it signifies the greatest gift of all. Instead we all use it as an excuse to overindulge our kids, our purses/wallets, our bellies, our senses with drink and cancer sticks and probably even drugs in many cases.

I despair that hedonism seems to be the order of the day.
