Is The King Charles Portrait A Waste Of Money?

Ask a Question

Is it a waste of money to have a new portrait of King Charles?

When it's done, it's going to hang up in public buildings like government offices and schools for free. But it's going to cost a whopping £8million in the new scheme.

It’s just a shame our monarchy expects all the pomp and ceremony. We should follow Denmarks attitude.

A complete waste of money! The worst thing is they have more than enough to pay for it themselves. Just sickening that people are starving and then we spend money on this sort of thing

How did this cost £8m?

I would like to see a breakdown of where all this money was actually spent .

King Charles is just like his late mother. We the taxpayers should be grateful to see their portraits everywhere and who cares if the taxpayers are footing the bill.

Mango4 it's the cost of the whole scheme, to have the portrait painted, then reproduced and installed in whatever buildings they intend.

Isn't it nice to see the royals cutting back!

Don't they ever consider how much good £8million could do if spent in better ways?

On second thoughts, perhaps I should become a royal portrait painter - I could be set for life 😲

tumblespots they discussed this on daytime tv yesterday and someone said 8 million is a drop in the ocean of public spending. Well, try telling that to people who can't heat or eat, people who are suffering from cuts in social services. If I held the purse strings I could make 8 million go a helluva long way, and I speak as a monarchist and history freak!

Lynibis I don't watch tv, but I can't understand why the royals say that they understand what we are all going through but then demand all the pomp and circumstance despite the costs it incurs. Like you I could spend 8 million in far better ways!

As lovely as it is. Its a waste of taxpayers money. We could use that money on helping those living in poverty

I can't stand the monarchy but realise I'm in the minority that want them abolished and their assets reclaimed. I resent the fact if someone dies with a house who has no relatives or partner the crown claim that house or land which could be used for council housing stock or land to build more houses or farms, factories etc. I just resent the monarchy. I strongly believe in everyone being equal whatever their gender, skin colour, sexual preference, physical state etc. I hate elitism but if I was to accept elitism it would be for great achievers perhaps great business people, sports people, scientists and inventors not for inbred germans whose eyes practically touch. We need to understand we rely on each other to create wealth and provide a good community. Also most upper class people are pretty useless individuals I find especially politicians. I feel the UK underperforms as a country because we still have a class system even though its not as bad as it used to be.

£8 million is a significant chunk of money that could be used for saving lives, providing shelter and feeding those who are struggling.

BonzoBanana l concur with all that you say but no longer give my view or opinion as someone on this site took offence to my comment.. l would like to of said everyone is entitled to a view/opinion, (freedom of speech) we don't have to agree but to say l was wishing the said person (who I was commenting on) ill health, when they already have the said ill health, prompted me to remove my comment and from now on keep all my opinions and views to myself.

BonzoBanana I am not being rude but wonder who would reclaim the assets. They have been in the hands of chieftains then monarchs since we stood up straight. If the government reclaimed them do you think us plebs would get a share?

It’s a total waste. If he wants one let him pay out of the money we have already given him.

Apparently it would have only cost 2 million if he never had ears 😂😂 The money could have been so much better used to help homeless people, people that are struggling or even to stock up food banks which seem to be growing monthly or even a home shelter for homeless war veterans. People say the royals do great things for us, well if taking 8 million out of people's pockets is great thing I'd hate to see them do awful things. AND YES THAT'S A VOTE FOR A WASTE OF OUR MONEY

Total waste of money far better spent on helping families that are struggling if the government and the king feel the need for it then Charles should fund it

Definitely a waste of money. Everybody in any office is brilliant at that spending other people's money. It's about time ordinary people had a say on this waste.

This is a complete waste of money, as is the RF. A referendum should be held which will hopefully get rid of this outdated, unaccountable, privileged and undemocratic institution.

All comments so far based on attitudes and emotion - not financial fact. The money paid from monarchy (rents, taxes etc) to government far outweighs the royal grant. (Govt to monarchy).

Aside : Rwanda scheme 400 million this apparent cost 8.

jam45 I wouldn't abolish the monarchy neither, people's ignorance to what the royals bring is very apparent on here. Regarding the unique class system, we ain't unique, the vast majority of the world have class systems like ours, if not more apparent of elite classes and the majority lower class.

Absolutely a waste of money, using the money that we hard earned for some stupid fame! I could have used that much money to do much more useful stuff. The royals don’t understand how poor people or just normal people live. SO YEAH ABSOLUTELY WASTE OF MONEY!!!

Yes, complete waste. We still have so many people homeless in this country, spending all that on a painting is insulting.

I have never seen such a lot of unintelligent and ignorant comment as that printed above. The portrait of the king is not for him. It is a normal government - of any political leaning - requirement to have a picture of the Head of State in public offices. All the ranting about class, privilege and homelessness is irrelevant to the question; they might just as well use the same comments about whether we should waste public money on producing British flags.
