Do You Know How Much Money is Thrown into the Trevi Fountain Each Year ?

Ask a Question

I think most people who have holidayed to Rome have made that special trip to the Trevi fountain to toss a coin in it for good luck

Made famous by the film La Dolce Vita , it must be the most famous fountain in the world

And the more coins you toss into it , the more luck it is said to bring

According to longstanding legend, if you toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, it guarantees you'll return to the Eternal City. Toss one coin in and you'll be granted a safe return to Rome, two means you'll get a safe return and fall in love, three coins guarantee all of the above, plus a wedding

No wonder it has to be emptied twice a week with so many wishing for the three coin jackpot

But what surprised me was the amount collected over the year , nearly £1,2 million was collected in 2022 and it goes up each year

They use brooms to sweep the coins into position for vacuum hoses to suck up the coins, they are then collected and go to the Caritas’ office run by the church as a none profit making organisation , after drying of course

I suppose the saying 'Look after the pennies, and the pounds will take care of themselves' , to 'coin' a phrase , is quite apt here , although i suspect there will be a mixture of cents , pence and other low value coins from different countries in the mix

I have not tossed any in myself , i don't like to throw money away, lol
