Lidl Copying the Coca Cola Lorry

Ask a Question

I really don’t know what to say apart from stop copying and get your own ideas. The Coca Cola lorry is iconic and been going since 1995. In my opinion you can’t top it. What are your thoughts?

It is a bit sad and pathetic the way the two German supermarkets copy big brands but they do seem to get away with it. In some countries it is illegal to do so and the big brands can legally stop them. Here in the UK it's a bit mixed sometimes the legal challenges work and sometimes they don't. Really we need to tighten up the law as there is no reason that Lidl and Aldi can't come up with their own packaging designs and stop trying to pretend their generic offerings are the same as the big brands. Freeway cola is pretty vile as is most supermarket cola I find. I don't drink it because of the sugar but you can't beat the original Coca Cola for taste and I actually like Pepsi Max as probably the only cola I occasionally drink.

Lidl are giving away freebies so it could be a cheap family trip for some who live nearby their route.

I am not a fan of adverts normally , but i do like the Coca Cola one, it gives off a warm and cosy feeling with the lorry all lit up , i haven't seen the Lidl one yet though

I don't think the original can be topped but if it's legal, Lidl may as well do it if freebies are on offer 😏

It’s daft really. I remember the caterpillar cake case. I get each store have their own products but for example a mince pie is a mince pie wherever it’s from. So I suppose Lidl can have their own truck. It’s not imaginative though just to use others’ ideas. It’s quite lazy. Aldi are always good with their ads though, makes me smile.

Makes me wonder if our food shop would be cheaper if competing Supermarkets didn't have to keep taking each other to court over copyright Infringement.

blacklabrador Also free up a bit more court time for real crimes. If we could have simpler more robust legislation to prevent design theft then they wouldn't do it I'm sure. If Lidl and Aldi lost every case which is pretty much what should happen they would soon stop.

BonzoBanana The cynic in me thinks that maybe the companies having their items copied secretly enjoy, and court, the free publicity. I would be amazed if sales of the M&S Colin the Caterpillar cake didn't shoot up last year when the very public furore was all over the media.

blacklabrador Court costs are expensive though and it takes a lot of time and resources. I suspect it is still a negative financial deal for them but might mean some bonus sales. The fair play chip in me thinks product design copying should be stopped, there is no reason not to come up with your own packaging designs and the only reason Aldi and Lidl do it is because there are some people stupid enough to think these generic low cost products are the same as the big brands just because the look the same. Admittedly many of these products are broadly the same but others taste significantly different.

I bought some premium instant coffee in Lidl that looks like the premium big brands but its taste was inferior and I had to keep stirring my cup to stop all the sediment going to the bottom of the cup which I don't remember doing when I've bought the premium brands on occasion when there has been a big reduction in places like Tesco. It was a much inferior product but was presented like the big brand product. It now sits in the cupboard getting used very slowly.

🤣 this is pretty funny that they called the truck freeway cola. If there’s more freebies for people it can’t be a bad thing
