Litter/Rubbish

In the News

It never ceases to amaze me how many slobs there must be in this country. In the news on bank holiday it was all about volunteer litter pickers. I’m not getting at them I think they do a brilliant job- but they shouldn’t have to! How hard is it really to find the next available bin or if not take a bag with you and put all your rubbish in and take it home! It’s just lazy and they are probably first to complain about the environment!

Don't like the word slob but yes we should all take our rubbish home with us if we don't dispose of it properly.

MelissaLee1 I don’t really like the word slob either but I’m talking about those very lazy people that make you want to call them that.

Please don't get me started, I'm a total neat freak in every field possible, l have been hoeing the weeds & sweeping most of the road l live in since pre covid times. But l always want to say 'Please leave any place the way 'l would' and not leave it as you would like to find it' as l have been told many a times my standards are too high. I don't believe they are 😄😄, though my home is more like a show home than a lived in home!!

Sadly if bins are available they need personnel to come along and empty them and that costs money. Volunteers are doing it for free..... An easy decision for any organisation counting the pennies unfortunately.

Auntielettie But surely it’s better to put in your home bin rather than leave it scattered everywhere spoiling the nice places.

JLouM I agree but people don't seem to want to take home their own rubbish. It's too easy to expect it to be somebody else's job to clean up.

Auntielettie That’s exactly my point. It’s so lazy. I always take a bag for my rubbish. It’s not difficult.

I'm not a particularly tidy person. My house tends to always look a little lived in. But it's not like a hoarders place or anything and I do keep things clean if not tidy.

That being said, I hate littering. I had a go at a bunch of uni students in a public park once. They sat there drinking booze and eating KFC and subway. I honestly don't care about the booze, if people want to drink in a park in the daytime, have at it, as long as you're not making a nuisance of yourself. But when they got up to leave, they left all their rubbish on the grass, 50 feet from a bin, and there was more than 10 of them, so the patch they were sat on looked like a mini landfill by the time they left.

I waited to see if anyone else would say anything, as I'm not a confrontational person generally. After they got near the exit with no one having said anything, I jogged over to catch up with them. Initially asked them politely to go back and pick it up, put it in the bin. Was told to F off by a couple of the lads, so I just got my phone out and started taking a video of them. Told them I'll file a police report and that I'll take the video to the university to have staff identify them, then report them there too.

The girls in the group then apologised and went to pick it up. The lads did not, but they did stop mouthing off after I started videoing. I will never understand the mentality behind dumping trash in public spaces, especially when you live/work/study there yourself. Just, why?

FearLoathing I’m not confrontational either and I wouldn’t have gone that far but they should be made to see what they are doing to their own and others recreational spaces. I bet it wasn’t like that before they arrived or they would sit there if it was. I have no problem in people enjoying themselves sensibly and considerately but they should clear up after themselves.

JLouM Was honestly out of my nature, but the amount of litter they left was mind boggling. I knew if I said nothing I'd stew about later after picking it up myself. I also didn't expect it to escalate the way it did, I thought they'd probably just go back and pick it up. I did lose my cool when they started mouthing off at me though

FearLoathing I am shocked at the behaviour from these so-called university students. They of all people ought to know better when it comes to recycling and disposing of litter properly.

FearLoathing even though it could have ended badly you did a good thing because they WILL think twice before they do it again. I did same with two teen boys when sitting in car in a private car park. Wound down window and called out politely 'hey guys, there's a bin just round there'. They both smiled and raised a hand in a thank you gesture then picked up rubbish and took to bin. I called out thank you and all's well that ends well.

FearLoathing I've stopped many people and politely asked them to pick up their rubbish over the years, most are embarrassed and pick it up no problem, however 2 summers ago, I saw a small hand come out the window of a parked up car and drop a half full mc Donald's fizzy drink, it landed standing up, so I picked it up, leant through the window, handed it back to the boy, approx 10 years old and I said oops I think you dropped this mate, to which I got a load of abuse from the father in the driver's seat, as I walked away, they throw the drink at me, but is missed, hitting a poor lady passer by, she then started arguing with them, the car pulled off in a huff without looking, cutting up and crashing into a car, fair amount of damage to the car, think that's what they call instant karma!!!!

janphoenix51 That’s very good. They sound like very mature good people. It’s just a few that spoil it for everyone else. Clear plastic bags is good, at least there is no excuse.

My partner, daughter & I went to visit the Blue Lagoon while holidaying in Malta & after eating their snacks a lot of people just discarded their rubbish so even though I was on holiday I was picking it up & binning it..

Why go to a beautiful Island & then litter it with your rubbish because you can't be bothered to carry litter back with you.

The Blue Lagoon Beach won't stay beautiful if people continue to litter it!!

We found a little Lizard friend on the beach who loved the bit of Tomato we fed him from our sandwich!!

There's bins literally at the bottom of my stairs. All summer I've had kids leave rubbish either on my landing or on the stairs. We get adults that do the same it's vile. Yesterday it looked someone had vomited chocolate on my stairs. Really annoying. I posted on a local Facebook page as anonymous but the admin won't post it. I'd rather not have my address plastered all over Facebook as I work in education and know to many kids

Jerseydrew That’s horrible. Probably best not to share on Facebook. I suppose I was referring more to teenagers and adults rather than kids. Young kids need to be taught and guided by the parents or guardians.

It isn't just laziness, it is utter contempt for other human beings and the environment. They just don't want to, it is easier to sling it away and expect others to pick up after them. That mindset is evident in most aspects of their lives.

You're quite right.

I see people littering right in front of me 😕 they just intentionally drop their cigarette butts, tissues and papers on the floor ..it annoys me .. I feel like tapping them on the shoulder and saying I think you dropped something but I don't because they'll only show me attitude.

As someone who does litter pick, it is super annoying. I can clear a street, then go back a month later and it’s back to it’s original state.

there are always some who just dont care and will just dump rubbish even when there is a bin within easy reach and are quite blatant about it. Sadly these are the ones you just cant approach and ask them to clean up as you will just get abuse.

Me and my family have done a litter pick each week and then contact the companies who we have picked up and highlight the litter problems in the area or sometimes my kids will say how nice they liike the product and they then send some free coupons and merchandise .
