Man Hacks Scammers

Other

YouTube randomly recommended me this video and it's great! A man gives scammers a taste of their own medicine by hacking into their system webcam and exposing them.

I'll have a watch later, thanks.

Have you seen Scam Interceptors on BBC One? It's quite interesting.

The episodes are very similar but some have a fair difference.

JLouM there was a report on BBC news last night that the fraud squad convicted a scammer, he’s been sentenced and they will try to take his assets.

Entire YouTube channels which exclusively produce this content have been around for years and years. It's actually not a very complicated process to do, and, unsurprisingly, most of these scammers are actually pretty stupid, without any formal education in IT. They're usually just following a prompt script, and they're not even particularly good at that.

Hacking and exposing them is a bit like whack-a-mole. It will never solve the issue until the police in their host country (usually India) actually start enforcing the law and arresting them. Due to corruption and/or lack of resources, most reports go unanswered. If one gets taken down, somebody quickly replaces them. It's a multi billion dollar industry. And, unfortunately again, English speaking countries are their biggest targets.

The software the scammers rely on to hack your computer is exactly what the vigilante hackers use hack theirs. It's just remote access software, usually anydesk. It's not even technically hacking, since you have to grant them access to your computer yourself in order for it to work. A bit like if you invite a burglar into your home, you can't really call it breaking and entering if you opened the door and told them to come in. But once that permission is granted, the hackers just use some software to reverse the access request. Once that's done, hackers can delete files, track location by IP address, turn on webcam, access and delete files etc. If scammers weren't so stupid, they could avoid these things happening very easily, but they get taken for a ride every single time.

This is the original reverse scammer. The one who started it all on YouTube. Jim Browning

This is the new generation. Young'ns are taking it to a new level, rented an entire call center for themselves, huge team dedicated entirely to preventing scammers getting victims.

Hundreds of channels like theirs. Really worth showing to older and less tech savvy relatives and friends. They're satisfying to watch, but more importantly, they give you a very clear understanding of how all these scams work. Decent safeguarding exercise.

FearLoathing The government should fund these people to help catch the scammers, unless they already do but are not letting on to the public 🤔

FearLoathing It is Jim Browning on the Interceptors programme I posted above 😊

Sadly a lot of countries people get 'hired' to do this, they see it as a job and earning money, which is super sad, as it is stealing, usually from those that have very little themselves and have worked super hard for it.

CATFISH: Season 8 Episode 54: Adam and Mercy, is worth a watch too.
