it wasn’t that long ago when I saw the supermarkets had loads of Mother’s Day flowers and plants with no homes to go to, and now millions of plants, shrubs and trees could be binned in the coming days and weeks, meaning ruin for UK growers
very sad to see things go to waste
A few of the Nursery's around here are doing telephone orders, then delivering them to your front garden.
That’s perhaps what will help them stay afloat. Others who are unable to deliver or fulfil online orders will just end up watching their livelihood disappear. They will be asking for help, but I doubt the government will be able to bail them out
My mum was saying yesterday that near they are in France, instead of throwing all of it, they bring the small plants in pots to cemeteries.
I think that is something they should do also, as the idea of just chucking it is wasteful. Or with the new hospitals being set up, they could donate them to brighten the place up. Definitely not just to chuck them out
gaelle0501 I thought visiting wasn't allowed at all at the moment. I had thought that Caz2 meant that you weren't allowed them at any time anymore (I'm getting confused now?!). 
Caz2 Is that now during the crisis or has it been that way for years? I don't know because we haven't been visiting in hospital for many years.
tumblespots its been for a long while i think,certainly over last 5years or so,maybe more.its a shame.
Caz2 I do think it's a great shame as flowers (under normal conditions) can cheer up a patient and raise their spirits.
What a shame. So many people would be glad of these plants and shrubs at the moment as they are stuck at home and doing some work in their gardens. I like the idea of them being delivered to cemeteries. It is sad for producers.
My local garden centre Blue Diamond are doing taking telephone orders for a spend over £50 and will deliver to your front garden.
I have the solution. Just put them out in the car park. I don't drive but I will find a way to get there. I will load up with them and take them home. I will adopt as many babies as I can fit in a car. Actually being the resident farmer here at latest deals, I wait every year until June/July and you can pick up lots of plants for 50p or a £1. I never buy plants at full price. With the land I have now I am in the market for some new plants, so I will be hitting the nurseries (assuming we can ever get back to normal and these will still be in business) and seeing what I can rescue in the 'poorly plants reduced' section. I like getting the ones that look half dead and bringing them back to life for about 20p.
Lol you must have the magic touch. Most of the time whenever I am given flowers or plants, they just die...I haven’t the patience, so I usually give them to my mum to enjoy
hspexy I just potted on a giant oxeye daisy I bought last year for 50p in the reduced section this afternoon. it is now so big it is in an old pond liner because it needs so much room. I see plants as my babies so I don't like it when they die. I have to nurse them. I'm pretty good at bringing them back to life. some times I fail, but mostly I will succeed in nursing them.
A good scheme would be if you could pay, say, £10 and then they gave you a collection time to go and get a random selection of plants they had picked for you. Not essential shopping admittedly but then a lot we buy isn’t essential.
Very true. Tbh even if most will deem shopping for such things as non essential, you can’t deny the impact it may have for someone emotionally and psychologically. In these times, it’s important to keep the spirits up
I was thinking to get some flowers, because we have none, but since they throw the flowers....now they throw plants???? What is the point really....yesterday they told they told this virus stays on the fruits, vegetables not comes off with washing...some expert told that it also can not be removed with some of the cleaners...
Honestly it may lives in the water too and we drink it daily...
Caz2 they told in the TV it can have the virus on and u can not wash it off...maybe just eat banana and orange and kiwis....and everything else wrapped in plastic...
AgnesFaludi yes ive been buying just stuff pre-wrapped.see,i said making everything plastic / bag free would come back to bite them on the a**rse! Im all for saving the earth but the lack of covering on stuff is helping spread the blooping virus!!
Oh dear why don’t the nurseries take a trolley out to the nearest main road with a lay-by and have a help yourself sign out. Could ask those that take the plants to kindly send a small cheque to the growers. Win win for everyone.
They could do that but there’s the chance that they will get nothing from it, although if they’re chucking it all away anyway, they will definitely get nothing. It’s just another industry that is not necessary and will perhaps die with the times anyway, just that the recent events have sped it up
I saw a recent tv piece from Plants Galore and thought it was really sad. The owner said he wouldn't be able to deliver because that wasn't essential travel. If people paid remotely and a full load of deliveries were made in one day it would go a long way to stay afloat. I'm sure that gardens are going to be life-savers for some people in the next few months.
Unfortunately there was no mother's Day and for florists they had hardly any sales and are struggling
I am completely busy with my gardening work. It gives you a great feel at the end of the day. I wish I could buy these lovely plants.
Same here. It’s now the season for gardening and being green fingered, so it’s sad to hear that so many plants are being dumped
