Morrisons Scaling Back Self Checkouts

Ask a Question

Should all self-checkout tills be removed?

Morrisons is scaling back their self-checkouts, citing increased shoplifting as the reason. What are your thoughts?

I remember a few years ago when self checkouts first came in there was an article in a national newspaper that Tesco had never sold so many individual carrots. People were picking carrots at weigh in instead of avocado.

Seeing is believing, my local store has about 10-12 manned tills left , but only 2-3 ever open . Pointless doing away with self scan if they are not going to staff the other tills properly which I suspect they won't.

Mango4 That's a good point - they would need more on the tills.

At busy times the self checkouts don’t seem to be much quicker to me. They always need staff to enter a code etc and there’s usually one or two people only

Aldi have it right. There are 4 machines in the corner for people who prefer doing it themselves. We always use checkout and whenever there starts to be a longer queue they ALWAYS open another. If they can do it why can’t the others? Sainsburys is really bad but we still wait as we prefer a human being. Can also sort out issues directly with them rather than waiting for assistance from staff that are in mid conversation.

JLouM Our Aldi have had self checkout for around a year now and it's so much better when I go in for one or two things.

Only this morning I went shopping at Aldi after our holiday ..

An Aldi employee was asking & directing customers to tills.

As I didn't want a self service one she told me that I would have a wait!

I said that I would wait & I did.

I don't like self service tills at all, I prefer to see REAL PEOPLE, when ever I do shop with my partner at a self service till he nearly always has to call a member of staff anyway!!

When I shop alone I always use a till with a REAL PERSON!

I hate going to a manned till I prefer self service especially when I'm doing a massive shop it's easier. When shopping in places like supermarkets I use jam doughnut for cashback so the scanner I use in waitrose means j know how much I've spent and can put it onto jam doughnut before I get to the till and I get keep an eye on what I'm spending easier

Jerseydrew I just use my phone calculator so I can use jd but still use a human checkout.

JLouM I've dyscalculia so the scanner works better for me as it's easier and does the deals calculation for me

We do the shop and scan system which we find the easiest. At least you know how much something is before buying it. My husband was in our local tesco the other day, purchased reduced 2 packs oxo cubes for 90p each and was charged £2.20 each at the self service till.

Jerseydrew He did go back and get a refund but then a few days later my daughter went into the same store. Purchased six packs of reduced biscuits but got charge six reduced price and full price for another one she did not have. She always checks when in store so refund immediately. But this could be happening to loads of people.

Jerseydrew You need to always check your receipts. My mum purchased two packets of ginger biscuits on a deal but when she got home I noticed they had not done the deal on the receipt. The stores are making money when they shouldn’t.

eyeballkerry yes and same when using the manned tills. Staff on tills don't always know the deals especially if you only work a few hours a week

This is always a chat 💬 topic that’s up for debate lol 😝 I think it’s best to have both self checkouts and staffed ones too that will at you can decide which one you want and can see which side has a lot of people

I think this is good, I much prefer a person if the queues aren't ridiculous! I have no idea how people are shoplifting at self serve though they all have cameras in my local one so really not sure if that is the reason or people just prefer the human interaction.

I hate the self scan tills. I refuse to use them. I’d much rather have human interaction at a regular til

I love the self checkouts as I get out of the store a lot quicker than I would if I was to use a manned one. I can also pack things in the order I want and at my own pace.

I never use the self service tills and it does annoy me when our Asda has 6 'manned' tills - but rarely has more than 2 open at any time even when there are big queues
