How Naff Conservatories Can Knock Thousands off Your House Price

In the News

At one time it was all the fashion to have a conservatory

I have had a few in my time , they always added extra space and value to the house , and i always considered them an extra room

And when i sold the house it always added value to the sale

Not any more apparently

They now seem to be out of fashion and favour with buyers and some wont entertain a house with one

In fact the article says you could lose £15,000 or more from the sale having one

Wow really? Got to love how fashion changes. I think the pandemic has made people appreciate their outside space even more. I think some would rather build a summer house for extra room and use it as an office but not attached to the actual house

Jerseydrew Yes it's strange how things go in and out of favour over time J

People would queue to buy a house with a nice conservatory at one time

I still think they are a plus , they can make a house seem bigger

Always wanted a conservatory and a long garden but they don't go well on council estates lol.

Love conservatories and would like one myself although would have to move a shed which is only a pavement width away from the rear of the house. Whether a conservatory adds or detracts from the value of a house must surely be down to the buyer. Also the state of the conservatory and how it looks must be a huge factor.

BonzoBanana Besides being an extra room and somewhere to sit with more light than a darker room in the house , it helps to bring the outside in , especially if you have nice views at the rear of the house for instance

Of course older ones can fall into disrepair if not maintained , but this can depend on whether it is built of UPVC or wood and the quality of the glazing

And security wise it is an extra barrier to stop thieves getting in if built around a rear entrance
