Norway Bans British Bulldog and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breeding

In the News

I am torn on this one

I love both breeds and think they are lovely dogs, but if the breeding is and has caused serious health problems then i suppose it is not fair for animals to suffer because of cross breeding

But they do say, quote, implying a but

“A conviction does not imply a ban on serious breeding of Bulldog or Cavalier, as serious and scientifically based cross-breeding could be a good alternative,” the judgment states.

I wonder if other countries will follow suit, including the UK ?

That’s the problem with pedigrees but not all potential owners read about the general conditions these breeds possess. A friend had two King Charles spaniels, both died young.

You are right P, some people buy on impulse and looks, not bothering to look into the potential illnesses there can be from cross breeding

Also you don't tend to think about these problems when going for a rescue dog, it's giving it a good home is the priority

A lady who used to be a neighbour a few years ago had a King Charles I think and seem to remember their brains can grow larger than their skulls or something and the British Bulldog's always seem to have breathing difficulties. It's horrific how we breed in defects to many animals by not letting them breed naturally and end up with horrible genetic traits. Always had Heinz 57 moggies and would never pay to have a pedigree cat. I totally agree with Norway and hope more countries start banning the worst pedigree dog and cat breeds and hopefully extend it. Alsations with hip issues is another issue, just letting them breed more naturally creates I think a more interesting dog and healthier too.

Thanks for that input B, it does make you think seriously about owning certain breeds now that can suffer from various man made issues

I support this stance, I think its cruel to continue to breed a strain of dogs knowing that this will have serious health issues. No pet lover wants to see their pet suffers.

Yes and when it all goes horribly wrong they abandon em roadside. Designer dogs are a growing concern.
