Notting Hill Carnival 2024...

Other

God, I honestly had forgotten this existed and wish they wouldn't do it anymore, but during August 24 to August 26 the streets will be inundated with it. 😑

Years ago I accidentally got mixed up with this event (left the train and told to exit the alternative door) and it felt like a dump, people puking, p*ssing, stuff broken, garbage everywhere, arguments... Dang zombie fest that was. The 2023 wasn't any better so the 2024 will likely be even worse.

Avoid it if you can.

This has surprised me ! I live in a little village deep in the heart of Wiltshire and have never been to Notting Hill Carnival, only seen it on TV and social media, so I imagined it to be all hearts and flowers & love and laughter 🥴

Jerseydrew unfortunately any large scale event will always have an element of people doing bad things. Shame people can’t just go and have a good time without all the bother

I’ve only been once, years ago was so much commotion but music was good. I wouldn’t go back but least I was there , glad I was with people who knew where to go as had no clue myself.. especially as so many people.

I've no plans to go this year, but I've always enjoyed the Notting Hill Carnival when I've been in the past. All of the negative things you've mentioned are common at many large scale outdoor events (or outside a lot of pubs around the country on a Friday or Saturday night).

ACR There is just no control at this event and even the police get harassed by the folks who go to it.

Can't imagine how bad the last day will be this time around. I'll just try to avoid it.

"So far Police have made 38 arrests, recovered 4 knives & 1 person has been stabbed - but it’s been a mostly peaceful day."

Oh, nice. Mostly peaceful. 🤪

The day isn't over and there's still tomorrow so probably more to come.

PhilipMarc given a million+ people attend the Notting Hill Carnival every year the figures aren't too bad.

Every year more than a million people attend Notting Hill Carnival, a mix of locals and tourists, with attendance of up to two million recorded in previous years - metro.co.uk/2024/08/25/everything-need-know-notting-hill-carnival-2024-2-21484954/

To put that in perspective that's, at least, the population of Birmingham in one relatively small area split over 3 days.

Plus, the 'Notting Hill Carnival generates close to a whopping £400 million every year, giving a “huge” boost to the economy, a study has shown' - www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/notting-hill-carnival-generates-close-33454097

ACR One million people?????? on the streets dancing, etc!!!! I have watched the news and read the Metro, over the years and it looks more like 10,000 people to me, even when the news shows the carnival from a helicopter!!

I am "hoping" when the international participants in the Notting Hill carnival parade have all gone home (to their various countries) after their visa has expired but I will not be holding my breath.

my friends who live in London love it and go every year. Not something I would be interested in, but I hate large crowds anywhere these days. Since covid rarely go out in busy areas unless I really have too

Sad news... 2 of the 8 that were reportedly stabbed, have died.

Unnecessary violence that could have been avoided if they canceled this event or relocated to a place where the police had full control of it.

RIP.

PhilipMarc It is so, so sad what happened to both of them. As far as I am concerned the Notting Hill Carnival is "past it" and needs closing down.

PhilipMarc if it had been a English carnival celebrating our history, it would have had been shut down ages ago, these are the times we live in unfortunately

Just seems like stabbings everywhere nowadays, I won't be surprised in a few years if we hear of weddings or christenings etc where people just start stabbing each other when a argument gets too heated. It's just such a weird society nowadays with the bar raised in violence it seems year by year. Thank god we haven't got easy access to guns in the UK which would make it far worse.

Was only there once when a friend had a hot dog stall over the weekend. Not a fan of the crowds or the smells
