One of the Main Reasons Fruit and Veg is Sold in Nets

In the News

Yes, the main reason people think this is done is to keep it fresher by packing in nets so it will breathe and keep fresher

But there is another reason, it is called the “Monker Illusion, and it was discovered by a German psychologist , Karl Gegenfurtner.

The netting apparently makes the fruit and veg colours brighter than they are , and more appealing to the customers , giving the illusion it is fresher

Psychology use is not new for supermarkets , they use all kind of strategies to fool the shoppers, polishing apples to make them shine and more appealing etc

So this is just another method to reel us in and 'net' us

Hence the reason why greengrocers and market stall holders may spritz their produce with water throughout the day - looks fresher and more enticing

hspexy Really????? I haven't shop in a greengrocer or market for many, many years. I used to find their staff dishonest - trying to put mould fruits into paper bag, rude and their products is not worth buying anyway. It's Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys for me. I buy lemons in a net; I don't mind one bit.

I hate the nets and try avoid buying any in nets. I prefer loose as its better for the environment

I found ages ago that it's cheaper to buy loose fruit and veg, example, 3 onions in a net thingy 89p loose 38p for 3, big difference

I like to read about this sort of thing because it’s much easier not to get caught out when you’re aware of the tactics

Load of rubbish as normal for this poster ! Do you grow your own spuds , onions, apples etc ? I thought not . I do and keep them in net bags hanging in my garage which then keeps them from rotting for many months over the winter .

Who are you to assume i don't grow my own veg ??

It hasn't taken long for a troll to appear here , there is always one , only joined 11 days ago and calling my posts rubbish , implying they know me so well 🙄

This was not my article anyway , so contact the editor if you want to complain and don't shoot the messenger

We try to help each other on here and are not in the habit of rubbishing each others posts

Thank you

telmel Well spotted and though I can't match your 7 years of membership I appreciate your checking up on mine . What may have eluded you is that I have been checking this site almost daily for the last 5 or 6 years -strangely in the hope of finding a deal ?

I have seen over the years that you have daily maxed out your ration of deals ? , comps and posts etc without ever posting a relevant conversation or indeed a great deal .

Fair enough ,it's an Amazon voucher earning site for you and the majority of members as you know only too well ?

The reason I eventually joined ? Over the last few months it has become obvious to me that many LD Hunters have been added who, so obviously, post directly from certain retailers (Amazon . Momando etc) . I thought I could maybe gently and politely inform the membership and indeed the founders of what has become of Latest Deals .

As a long term member I would have thought that you would share my worries yet the only comments I have seen from you is wingeing about when your posts or comments have been removed .

I have only a vague clue about what qualifies for points (I defer to your expertise on that ) but surely it is in your interests as for all members that the site should succeed as a "Deals Site " -not as an Amazon voucher earning site as it has become .

Perhaps the reason Latest Deals has sold their soul to Amazon etc (allowing direct access to multiple duplicate deals ) is because members are only interested in earning points ?

I could go on ,but I am genuinely frustrated that a deals site is crammed with paid for non deals and duplicates , yet long term members such as yourself never point that out to the founders .

Hope that answers your question about how an 11 day member has the "right" to criticise .

intherealworld Not really i

Welcome to LD chat anyway , you just chose the wrong approach in my opinion, you came in with all guns blazing criticising , myself and LD

We all know about Amazon and their pricing , indeed i don't always post deals from just Amazon, I alternate between retailers offering good deals

But remember , the site exists and is successful because of the way it is managed

No, not all is perfect , but it is run better than many other sites i have seen

If you are not happy with things i don't see the why you are here ?

You should be supporting not knocking it

intherealworld just because people use nets for different reasons doesn't mean there isn't a psychological reason as well

I hate that poxy netting, many of times I’ve tried prizing it open with fingers, only to come across worse off , sore fingers 😂 then when you cut it little bits of of fibres go everywhere!

Oh wow. Had no idea about this. Would be better to get rid of the net though. They end up in the ocean and choke sealife

Loose is so obviously better , no question . But referencing supermarket sales , net bags are so much better than polythene bags . Not just for shelf life but also when you get them home . When I do buy fruit or veg the first thing I do after getting home is take it out of the poly bag (as I'm sure we all do ?)

.I grow my own fruit and veg and buy net bags to hang up my produce in my cool garage -they then last for months .
