Outdoor Smoking

In the News

In the news there's talk of making outdoor smoking in certain areas banned.

I'm a non smoker j hate the smell of it. It effects my migraines. For all that I don't have an issue in pub gardens for smokers. Playparks most definitely really annoys me when people smoke where kids are running around and can get burnt

I suppose people have the right to suck toxins into their lungs but being a life long non smoker I hate seeing anyone smoke and feel a motherly need to tell them off!

I said years ago that when they banned smoking In pubs they would congregate outside. Now they want to ban smoking In certain areas? Whatever next. Its a personal choice like drinking, like driving, like everything else In life. We are all different but we are all being controlled.

I have never smoked and never will, but I do believe in personal choice. The government don't care about the health and wellbeing of the general public. It's all about control.

Well, I'm not against it. There is absolutely no benefits to smoking. It's not just a personal choice. Passive smoking also has health risks. I say this as a heavy ex smoker. I was on 40 a day at one point.

Glitterandgold..Both my parents were 40 cigarettes a day, our Irish Dad had Lung Cancer & Mouth Cancer, he was given 4 month to live & didn't make even that.Dad died a month off his 60th Birthday exactly, 36 years ago leaving a wife & 6 children aged 17-24. Our Mum battled Cancer twice & gave up her 40 a day habit, she lived til she was 80 then died of Pneumonia in hospital.

Out of 6 children only the oldest child actually smoked & he passed away from health problems 9 years ago aged 51, the rest of us have NEVER smoked & hate the smell..

janphoenix51 I can relate. My mum & dad both got cancer diagnosis just 6 weeks apart in 2011. My dad already had COPD. He passed at 61. My mum fought for another 18 months until she passed at 58. I was traumatised so much by watching them be so poorly & decided nah, don't fancy going out like that. Chucked them in after my mums funeral & never touched them again. I detest smoking now. I'd ban vapes too if were up to me.

I don't agree they should ban it outside, as long as you're not blowing your smoke in someone's face. It's enough that they banned indoor smoking.

Its going to happen one way or another eventually, so why not. Pubs are so much nicer being smoke free as are other places.

This really infuriates me , stopped inside, so go outside in all weathers now can’t in pub gardens ! Pay enough taxes for cigarettes to pay for it. Definitely wouldn’t smoke in playground . Won’t be able to smoke anywhere !

My concern would be that smoking generates lots and lots of tax, if all these schemes to encourage people to be non smokers work then where will the shortfall come from?

I'm not a smoker, I dont mind it though in pub gardens as we are outdoors. It does seem a bit harsh for those who do! Although I feel like as a nation we are smoking less? But maybe thats just people turning to vapes now

I stopped smoking over thirty years ago but I have no bother whatsoever with others who do. We all have annoying habits of one sort or another. We are fast becoming a nanny state.

I’ve never smoked and never tried. I hate having to breathe in other people’s trails and it affects my breathing badly. However, I’m not against people who smoke and I know a few people well who do. I still don’t see a problem with a designated smoking and non-smoking area in pub gardens. Smokers can breathe each others while leaving non smokers alone in other areas. I avoid going into town because so many in street just puff trails behind them that I can’t avoid walking into. So I’d be pleased if that changed. I can’t see it happening though, people will still do it anyway I expect. Parks and beaches can’t see how they can police anyway. Probably not good in kids swing parks though.

I have already responded to this but had another thought. As my daughter owns a pub she has staff who take cigarette breaks. One in particular takes many, so I would be over the moon to see how she would cope.

It's such an emotive subject. I'm a non smoker so it won't effect me from that point of view. I just wonder if smokers will move outside people's homes or shops. I live near a pub. On occasion we've had drunks vomit on the stairs to where I live. As there's other shops I've had to complain about the staff sitting on the steps smoking and not moving so I can get up with bags of shopping and worse try and get small kids up the stairs without getting burnt and dodge phones and drinks and as my place is right up the top of the stairs smoke filters in. I'm worried the smokers will just wake over to mine and it'll be worse

I don't have a problem with it in pub gardens. I don't like it in the playparks or near the primary school. I try to keep our son away from people smoking due to his heart condition but that's not always possible. I don't see the need to ban it in pub gardens though.
