A Pantry
Other
I remember my nan and grampy had such a huge pantry it was bigger than most utility rooms i have seen. All the dry goods, tins, cleaning stuff. It was so big their twin tub used to be in there when it wasnt being used. Our house used to have a smaller pantry with a really thick concrete shelf in. Apparently this was the ‘cold shelf’. Milk would be on it in a bowl of cold water. Cold meats covered would be on that shelf. I remember always wanting to have a look in other peoples pantries to see what they had in theirs lol. Oh and the candles and matches were always in there ready for a power cut !
Anybody else used to have a pantry and what was in yours
Jerseydrew we only removed ours as we had a lot of work done on the house to put a ‘granny flat’ on. Otherwise I would have kept it.
suevernon1968 yeah they aren't as practical as they used to be anymore which is why they are taken away
I've only seen pantrys in films but I;d love one.For me it's kitchen cupboards but not quite the same.
MelissaLee1 it was always like a bit of a treasure trove. I remember as a child being amazed what my nan could ‘magic’ out of the pantry !
suevernon1968 Like a secret chamber .I've always wanted one of those behind the book shelf as well!
MelissaLee1 my nans house was amazing. A fireplace in every bedroom the bathroom was huge and it was a massive bath. There were huge floor to ceiling cupboards and we used to be able to climb through from one cupboard to the next. Fabulous happy memories x
I've never had a pantry but think It would be very useful. I don't have a utility room either. Closest thing I'd my dryer is in brick shed
suevernon1968 thanks. Closest my parents had/have it best described as very thin built in cupboard thinner than my cupboard
Most Americans have a panty , not so much these days is the uk. My Nan and Grandad had one too but not like that fairly small but non perishables like extra large cupboard.
Growing up we had a pantry in our kitchen, we kept tins on the shelf & our freezer in there.
We also had an old school bell that my siblings & I used to ring, our Irish Dad had brought it home from work on the building site!
suevernon1968 ...No just 6 mischievous children taking their turns to ring the bell when we wanted to during our usual shenanigans!!
Yes when I was little, many years ago my parents home had a pantry, it was like Pandoras Box.
HEDGEHOGS i could never really work out how my nan could find stuff in there so quickly either !
Never had one. Ourselves but we bought a old house with one and we knocked it down the shelfs and put the central heating system in there for our new tenant
We made our garage into a diner and incorporated a pantry at one end under the stairs with a false wall and proper door. It always puzzles people as to where it leads! I keep all the things you mentioned in there except daily use items like condiments, tea, coffee, etc.
suevernon1968 thank you. There is more behind the wall where tv is with a filing cabinet containing things like tools, electrical equipment etc.
kitty88uk it is in middle of house so not really subject to heat changes and only used for unopened packets, jars and tins. Once open they go in kitchen cupboards. There is a light which I should have put on before taking photo. It is not a garage any more, we bricked up front with window, knocked through inside to kitchen so is now a kitchen diner. I have a recliner chair under window where I read or watch the tv which you can see in photo, only go in lounge to big tv in evening.
They’re not as common these days, although we stayed at a farmhouse for a hen so years ago that had a massive one. You’d only keep one if you had the space
I do not have a pantry but do have a utility room which is really handy. Keeps the kitchen free of items you don’t use all the time. My great grandma had a pantry and like you say everything was in it, these were used before fridges came along.
eyeballkerry i remember getting our first fridge with the little freezer bit at the top. First time we had ice lollies at home !
eyeballkerry yes, they often had a brick with holes which must have allowed all manner of insects in, but not sure how it stayed cool in summer.
We have a small pantry, I shelved it out a couple of years ago, we have all our tinned stuffed in their and I keep most of my tools on the bottom
martinlufc5637 and i bet your kitchen looks fab cos all the normal kitchen stuff is hidden
I think new homes have a downstairs toilet instead of a pantry .... They probably take the up same space
Auntielettie yeah I was thinking this as we have one in kitchen but we have turned it into a storage room, well it’s kind of like a pantry as we keep some foods in there. Our neighbour next door has the same layout but theirs is actually a loo area both are old houses
My mum & stepdad have a walk in pantry, it's amazing! When they renovated their bungalow, a pantry was on the top of my mum's list. My daughter loves it, she often plays in it and pretends it's her little shop
