Parents Condemn School for Barricading Toilets Shut during Lessons

Ask a Question

When i read this i thought it was ridiculous , if a child wants the toilet in a hurry they need instant access

They say it is to stop anti social behaviour, like vaping in the toilets, but if that is the case use smoke detectors as one mother suggested

What do the parents here think of this ?

That used to happen in my old high school 30 years ago. If someone was desperate they had to go to the nurses room. Smoke detectors don’t detect vape smoke. I’ve literally smoked one directly under a smoke alarm producing as much smoke as I could to try and set it off and it doesn’t.

TracyStorrie Thanks for that T, i dont smoke so i wouldn't have known that, smoke is smoke to me , but it is demeaning to have to ask to go to the toilet , moreso if it has to be unlocked first

TracyStorrie That's because you never "smoked" one under it, you vaped one under it.😋 I'm not being pedantic but that is the fundamental difference, one is smoke, the other is vapour.

Xenophon the person who wrote this post didn’t mention cigarettes they mentioned vaping. I was going off that 😊

I can understand the school for taking such drastic action. Let’s face it schools haven’t spare staff to constantly monitor toilets.

Pjran That's true P, but toilet needs are a basic human right , especially in a school, and it needs someone to be constantly on call to open and close the toilets, defeating the object of not taking up valuable time

The answer could be to put an electronic lock on the gate and give the pupil a swipe card to use it , just one alternative possibility

Kids can hold their bladders for in between lessons unlike me. Does a bus stop if someone needs the loo? No

Pjran Bladders maybe P, but diarrhoea, not something many can hold in for too long 😟

telmel if diarrhoea the child’s parents should be called and taken home obviously after using staff loo.

Pjran I think by the time the parents were called and getting permission to use the staff loos it would be too late

Speed is the essence in cases like this

telmel of course the child should use the staff toilets immediately if they can make it that far.

I remember being in middle school and a boy in our class not being allowed to use the toilet during an assembly. He, unfortunately, had an accident. The whole school saw him sat in a puddle of urine. I felt so awful for him, it baffles me why schools need to be so authoritarian when it comes to using the toilet. Surely they should be focusing on teaching.

Midnightflower Exactly M, and if they didn't have to spend time locking and unlocking the toilets they could spend more time on the lessons

I don't agree with it. I'm sure there would be better ways to monitor/stop the behaviour etc.

I don't know if I ever left class to use the toilet BUT I know that you shouldn't hold it too long, if you need to go to the toilet, you aren't going to learn, as you are focusing too much on trying to not pee yourself and can't take the information in.

Some people have to go, there is no doubt about it (even children) it would be more detrimental to them if they wet or crapped themselves in front of their peers.

Puberty! Males may have to remove themselves from the class room to 'calm their hormones' and those with female organs usually have periods, they don't always know when they are going to come on or leak, the quickest they can get to the toilet the better.

Discipline and respect has a lot to do with this, instead of blocking their access, teach them and encourage the correct way! If they don't listen, that is there problem, they loose out on learning and may find it harder in life, just tell them not to make it harder for their friends or others to learn.

I'm sure they are probably trying to stop certain children leaving class, but the teachers can ask these people and speak to the individuals separately. Don't punish everyone for one or two people in a whole class of 25-32 people.

Knowing there isn't an option to go, even if you've never left class for it, will probably likely encourage your body to want/need to go, added stress for no reason.

davidstockport oops, yes please don’t try and force some urine out.

I think I’ve fixed it.

I did read it back but clearly I knew what I was trying to say and filled in the blank in my head 😆

I don't think they should be allowed to close the toilets in any school, the children have a right to go to the toilet when the need to go, I appreciate that they're supposed to go in their breaks but it's not always possible.

As a kid, I recall it being standard for us not to use the loo during lessons, and only being permitted to go during our break - and the loos were so horrid, no kid went to the loo until they got home!

hspexy I can also remember those times H , but it should not happen in the 21st century

I say shame on those schools , haven't kids got enough to worry about

Has anyone here considered what if some of the kids have IBS or crohns? You can't hold then. Nevermind if you've got a period. It's a voilation of human rights to stop someone going to the toilet.

As someone who works with kids and in schools I hate it. If I say no to using the loo it's for a reason such can you wait 5 minutes for the end of assembly not a you have to wait til. Lunchtime

That is how it should be E, not torturing the kids making them cross their legs, besides it can cause bladder problems in the future
