Ask a Question

Should parents work term-time only?

One-third of parents with primary school-aged children say they’d consider it to spend more holidays with their kids.

I have three children. Two are primary school age. I would love to only work during school time. Unfortunately it's not practical especially because most the staff where I work have children. The company wouldn't survive and we would all be out of a job

Imnotcheap How did you juggle childcare when you had to work?

SamGoodship fortunately for us there is three adults at home during summer holidays (our daughter is 20) so always an adult there and my dad lives close by.

I do but I earn peanuts. I'd be better off working elsewhere but then I'd have my teenagers all day doing what they like

It would be great if people could do this but it isn't feasible. Businesses wouldn't be able to function properly.

dwtmf9hn78 I don't think it's as deep as that, but more a discussion

but that is where it should start, our tax money is getting squandered left right and centre and apparently now you can’t protest about it, or have any kind of decenting voice

They could do if they wanted.

And it's good to spend holidays your kids.

Employers should support this decision

I was lucky enough to be able to spend the first eight years of our daughter's life with her. My partner was earning a decent wage as a Support Worker with overtime til his contract was bought out...

We agreed between us both that I would stay home & look after our daughter while my partner worked, sometimes overnight..

I taught our daughter her basic Maths & taught her to read & when her Da was home he also sat reading with her & playing with her, taking us on family days out..

Like I said, I was lucky...

I know a lot of people who actually pay out what they earn in a day, to child care. Doesn’t make sense at all really and a fair few of them have actually stopped working during school holidays as they would rather just spend the time with their kids rather than working and paying the money out

It would be amazing, I personally would love to do it, however my business needs me to work more, and also I need to work for the wage
