Do You Still Pay Cash??
Ask a Question
I have always used cash to pay for shopping, days out etc.
Recently, I went to the cinema with friends and found out they only accept card transactions. This has put me off returning as I like to have the option to pay cash.
what do people think about this? Do people want a cashless society?
M1321 yes. I think it’s nice to have the option to do either. It’s always good to have a back up anyway. Look at when there was a digital issue and no-one could pay by card anyway
Where I work right now they have Introduced a card payment only In the cafe & at the bar. It should be a choice In my opinion but no you`re being controlled yet again by someone or something. Crazy.
I value choice. I like to have the option to pay cash which is my preference. Unfortunately, retailers are restricting this by limiting cash tills
I mostly pay card and it's rare I have cash on me so it doesn't bother me as much funny enough my local takeaways are the opposite, being cash only and I find that rather annoying
Where I live most people still pay by cash except when shopping for groceries in supermarkets or buying online. We would be devastated if cash disappeared!
tumblespots I find that where I am, the older generation are still using cash daily. It’s younger ones that are born into the digital world dont
Always carry about £20-£30 in cash just in case but I tend to use cash for smaller purchases say under £5, but lots of places are increasingly making it difficult to use cash many shops now have lots of card only Tills , but only a few cash tills, as you said our local Vue is Cashless as are the likes of Prezzo & Zizzi to name but a few , lots car dealerships for new or second-hand cars have been cash free for years.
I don’t use cash often tbh cause i find when i get change i end up spending it. I think it is unfair that a lot of places are going cashless though
jms19 I use cash and any small change I have I put in money boxes for different things. This helps me save for Christmas and holidays etc
I'm very old school and pay for everything by cash, it surprises most store / places l go to with the usual comment..( oh your paying by cash!!) Even my dentist check up this week was with cash, l don't do any online shopping at all.
Pinkspirit wow, that’s amazing. Credit to you! I pay cash where I can. But I do shop online in some cases. We don’t have a local Amazon store or anything. So I use card for purchases from there
I should use cash more frequently than I’d like but as lap hate small change especially if using a self checkout.. get 1p, 2p
LL81 I actually love getting small change. I pop it into money boxes and save it over the year. Then take it and get it changed for holidays and Christmas etc
I am the same, I like the option to pay cash.
I run a small business and I accept bank transfer (don’t have a card machine) or cash
I read an article that said if you can pay by cash you should. When you hand over physical money, there is a certain loss experienced. It leads to better money management as you feel you have lost something. There isn’t the same feeling with digital transactions. I’m not saying that all people who make these kind of transactions are bad with money - but there is some evidence that suggests the majority dont have as good a grip on finances
PayItForward withdrawing cash from the cashpoint hits home that you are spending money. You are spot on.
But I like my debit card for online shopping.
I still use cash to pay for everything when I go out shopping lol nothing wrong with that! I also do online a lot too but pay using gift cards that I earn
PayItForward that’s good to here! Great chat topic this is! Gets so many members involved too cause it’s an every day issue! How far along are you with the points on here? I’m not that far from getting a voucher lol so very grateful for this app! I get to talk to so many members and few helpful in sharing so many shopping deal offers!
kitty88uk I’m over the 200k mark lol. So glad to hear you like the site. I love shopping, so it’s even better when you get a few bargains
PayItForward Omg really?! How long did it take you to get there? Yeah I’m the same too I have 96% in points haha so not long to go until I get my next voucher!!
Yes me too! I always buy so many items that are reduced and great bargain offers and you have so many choices of items it just takes a bit of time to look for items in amazon haha
kitty88uk a year I think. Awh great! I know, they have anything and everything on Amazon. I love how much choice there is. Happy spending!
PayItForward thanks for your kind comment!! yeah I need to stock up on some face washes, face and body creams too I’m running low with the ones I’m using now. I usually have a few back ups but this time I don’t lol
martinlufc5637 me too. I have been put off returning to the local cinema because of this
jane100 yes I’m so glad there are still people wanting to use cash. I keep hearing people talking about going cashless and I’m like are you mad lol
I think there should always be a choice. Look at when there was that big IT problem. No one could pay by card anyway !
suevernon1968 exactly. I’ve heard people say, shops etc are less likely to be robbed if they don’t use cash (Fair point made). But look how many are being defrauded online - thousands of people everyday. It’s mental
PayItForward many years ago I worked in a small branch of a small building society. We actually used to run out of cash. The good old days of a little passbook. If someone wanted money and we didn’t have enough- we would sit the client down with a cup of tea and a biscuit whilst I dashed to the bank to get cash lol. No big screens, all very personal and friendly. Its sad how times change.
I know a lot of shops used to ‘bank’ their cash after closing in the big secure drawer thing on the outside of the bank.
Or is it no trust ? Bosses presume staff are stealing or are dim and would give out the wrong change.
Could even be as it is said that every bank note in circulation has a certain amount of illegal drugs on it - normally cocaine!
suevernon1968 wow. I love this. It is possible that companies worry about errors being made. Anywhere I worked with physical money, you were always in charge of your own till. If the till was ’down’ at the end of the day - it came out of your wages! It meant you checked the money you gave out was the right amount lol.
They do say cash is dirty. But so are public toilets shared by many people at airports, pubs, clubs etc. People need to be more responsible in terms of maintaining good hygiene and actually wash their hands properly after handling cash etc.
PayItForward here is an odd fact - totally off subject- the first cubicle in public toilets is the cleanest as people dont tend to use it.
Remember when you had to spend a penny to spend a penny!
suevernon1968 oh, I’ll have to remember that. Yes . I went to Cyprus a few years back and you had to pay to use toilets at the beach - took me right back lol
PayItForward i remember going to weston super mare - there was always an attendant there, there seemed to be a competition of whose public toilets were the nicest - i remember pot plants, pictures, little shell displays etc
suevernon1968 I wish they would take pride like that again. There are some places I would quicker drive home than use their toilets
The only time I use actual coins is for a parking machine or bus fare, but both seem to be being fazed out very quickly
Auntielettie I still use coins for parking even if they have the app to pay online. My husband has used the app before and forgot to stop it and ended up paying a fortune
Auntielettie one county near us only allow card payment which is a pain especially for older people whom struggle with the use of the machine. As you have to select vehicle, day or weekly and then how long I know if a few that’s ended up paying for a week instead of a hour or two. Should be both choices as other county had this choice.
Yes my husband went out with colleagues yesterday and most had cash to buy rounds followed by a curry. Only one paid by card.
Pjran that’s great. I feel you need cash for group settings - makes paying the bill easier
PayItForward easier if they all put cash in the kitty to buy a couple of rounds. Otherwise it’s always the same people buying!
I think it's a good idea to have some spare cash with you as anything could happen at any time, like with Sainsbury's recently. But otherwise I normally pay with my debit card.
RegularComper91 I mostly did but nowadays feel forced into using my card. I always keep a small amount of cash in my purse as I feel embarrassed paying for a very small item with a card.
RegularComper91 true. There would be nothing worse spending an hour at the supermarket to have to abandon your trolley at the till
I use phone or watch to pay for the ease, but have some cash on me for any card payment issues.
SilverSurfer I think it’s good to have both options. Obviously online shopping would not be possible with cash. But at the same time, card isn’t always reliable
I usually try to use cash then it’s easier to limit my spending. I take an amount out of my bank for groceries and I know that when it’s gone that’s it. It’s easier to overspend when using my card.
I always use cash. Or pay for things online with gift cards. I don't have much money so I find paying with cash helps me keep track of my money and not go overdrawn with my bank. If I do I'd get charged.
