Would You Pay Nearly Half a Million Pounds for a Beach Hut ?

Ask a Question

I know property prices are ridiculously high, and i bedroom flats in London the size of matchboxes can demand half a million or more

But this beach hut in Dorset was snapped up within 24 hrs of going on sale for £485,000 and it was a cash sale !

It was not only very expensive, but the new owner will have to pay a £3,652 annual licence fee to the local authority and £716 council tax.

But don't worry, it sleeps up to 8 people , has solar panels for electric, a water pump for the water supply , calor gas and chemical toilet

I am not sure if you can live in a beach hut all year around , or rent it out , as regulations differ all over the country , but whoever bought this obviously knows more than we do to shell out that much

Sandbanks is the most expensive coastal area in the uk. It’s where Harry Rednap and other millionaires live, not that he lives in a beach hut.

telmel there’s not enough wardrobe space in a beach hut as I know they cruise, usually free as a guest speaker.

Why would you spend that kind of money on a beach hut for? You cant live In them. Sandbanks may be for the rich but It still shares the UK weather with us. And paying that licence fee for a year Is ridiculous too. Its a bit like owning a Static at a holiday park which again Is steep In price. That Is what put me off when I was looking to own/buy one. Yes Sandbanks Is beautiful so Is most of the Seaside Locations dotted around.

Emerge11 i suppose this is where the divide comes in, most people in this country can’t afford to buy a house to live in and then some people can afford to spend half a million on a beach hut.

No chance. Don't see the point to them. I live close to the beach so for me a waste of time. I guess if you live far away from the beach they could be handy so you can have a weekend or week by the beach if it's one with a loo etc in it. Handy in the winter if you live in distance to pop down for an afternoon but not close enough to go down to the beach for a 20 minute walk

Jerseydrew I imagine the insurance on them won't be cheap J, especially with water levels rising and the severe weather we are having now

The seas at the south can be surprisingly warm so if you are staying in the UK then places like Sandbanks is the best place to be if you want the warmest temperatures. Sometimes currents drift across from hotter areas of Europe and increase sea temperatures out of season. Warm seas can have an effect on overall temperature if you are close to the sea even if the effect doesn't go much inland. Also the same effect is true if you have cold seas it can effect the temperature of beach resorts negatively even if just a few miles in it feels warmer. Still no way I'm paying half a million for a crappy hut like that. I'd rather have a motorhome I could drive about where I want it and not face additional council taxes etc.

Mind you the country is getting hugely overpopulated and just the other day I saw that there is 23,000 families waiting on the council housing list in Bristol and only 27,000 council homes in Bristol already occupied in total. There is a housing crisis and we need more land for farming so housing sizes will have to shrink to Japan size levels, cars will need to get smaller and we will need to travel less due to extreme congestion, lower taxes for local shops etc. I disagree with what has led to this situation but we have it now and the problem has to be solved. The point is something like this could be the size of smaller homes in the future. The smallest homes in Japan are shockingly small and they now have a lower population density than England.

BonzoBanana Imagine suggesting this to Americans B, there would be riots if they had to live in smaller houses and drive smaller vehicles 🙄

I doubt if many would fit in them anyway

It's an investment. Whoever purchased will not live in it, will keep and sell with profit. Period

SebK84 You are allowed to rent it out as well , at least in this area, so you would be making money while waiting for it to increase in value more

Good investment, probably bought to rent out, you can bet they'll make their money back in 10 years just renting it out, something like that would cost at least £3/4 grand a week

If you have the money, absolutely. It would be lovely living by the beach. Although, I’m sure it can be noisy on nice bank holidays

Like others have suggested it was possibly bought just for an investment and will be rented out, wonder how much it woulld cost for a weeks rental in the summer?

No, if I had that money why would I buy something that looks like a posh shed?

I wouldn’t , but can imagine for an investment, but still a beach hut still I don’t imagine many would want to pay a fortune just to be in a shed.

The same money abroad in a poorer country with better temperatures would get you something amazing close to a beach. You wonder in the UK with a declining economy and a real possibility of a default on our government debts how long term investments will work out, in ten years from now the UK could have dropped a huge amount in living standards.

BonzoBanana Also is it that healthy living next to the sea anymore ?

Besides rising sea levels and adverse weather to deal with the seas are polluted with chemicals sewerage and microplastics , i have seconds thoughts now about putting my big toe in it never mind swimming 🤒

telmel Probably a good point about the polluted seas although the rivers could be worse nowadays with sewage companies releasing sewage into them and farmers chemical waste too. I doubt they don't have their fair share of microplastics too. I still go into the sea at Weymouth etc, they look beautifully clean waters to me however further down into Devon and Cornwall there has definitely been water quality issues due to south west water releasing waste into the sea. This is another situation caused by overpopulation that isn't being discussed in the media. Much of our sewage and water infrastructure needs upgrading due to the increase in population but no one wants to pay for it and to be honest the money simply isn't there.

If I had more money than I knew what to do with probably would waste money on such things, but to the average person spending such an money on this is just madness.

I grew up in West Dorset and prices for huts have been crazy for years. You can rent basic beach huts from Lyme Regis council as a cheaper option.

Even if I had that amount of money spare I would definitely spend my cash on something else. Different beach huts have different rules and many councils will not allow you to spend overnight in them.

If I had that sort of money then probably yes as an investment in that area you probably cant go wrong. The rental money you could earn will pay back. It is a lovely area and you could buy a lot more for the same money just outside the area - but its the address that makes the difference to people with this sort of cash floating about.
