Paying Your Kids for Doing Chores?

Ask a Question

Do you pay your kids to do household chores?

One mom says she pays her kids for chores to help them understand money, but others argue she should just let them be kids.

Well I didn't have a sister so when I saw my mother doing the household chores then I just started to help her out at home so think this is a a good idea but kids shouldn't be forced into it

Really, no absolutely not , your kids should just be happy to help out . Maybe a small bride like after you've done so and so we can go to the park or something like that but not by paying them money.

Mango4 What if you used it as a way to get their pocket money?

I think kids should be given a monthly/weekly allowance, regardless of how many chores they do. Of course they have to help around the house, but it's really difficult to learn money skills, like budgeting, if they don't know how much money is coming in each month.

JaneDoe1 Around what age do you think you should start giving pocket money?

SamGoodship Well, it depends on the maturity of the individual child, but I'd say 8-10 is good guide. At what age can they choose a goal, and put some money aside more or less independently. Building good saving habits and financial responsibility is a big reason to give pocket money.

I remember wanting to go on a school residential holiday years ago but I had to earn some of the money to pay towards it. I had to clean and polish my father’s working boots daily. It did me no harm but I never forced my children to do anything like that.

I think its a good idea as its a way for them to earn extra money on top of the pocket money our daughter's both help with cleaning and washing up they both don't mind cleaning the car each week for the extra pocket money

Our son is 5, so he does small chores around the house, like helping put clothes in the washing machine, tidying his toys away, putting his clothes away. He doesn't get pocket money for doing it but he gets a small reward each month. Once he is older he will probably get pocket money for doing chores.

My child isnt at this age yet where I can pay them for chores, I'm not totally against the idea but I think I'd prefer them to just help out and then they get weekly/monthly pocket money as they get older

When my daughter wanted expensive items such a mobile phone I taught her that luxuries had to be earned by doing chores. I was studying for my degree at the time as a divorced parent and we had very little money. I am 100% sure she both valued and looked after her earned items far more than items she did not.

My mum used to pay a pound a week to do the hoovering and a pound a week to do the dusting. I never got pocket money. It didn’t do me any harm.

My son gets £2 pocket money, and if he helps me with odd jobs and I think he’s earned it il give him a £1 here and there. He’s saving up for this toy tractor he desperately wants and he is understanding he need to work and be good and then save and today we are going shopping for it as he now has enough money
