Did the Police Go Too Far in Arresting Mum for Unpaid Bus Fare?

In the News

I read this in disbelief, firstly that this was considered a police matter and how heavy handed they were, watching the film. I could see at least 3 police officers involved.

No wonder people think the police are institutionly racist, they havent even issued an apology, for the upset they caused her and her child just says she was de-arrested as it turns out she had paid.

The police go on to say she was abusive to officers, funny how they never seem to be this heavy handed with yobs.

They are not racist.

Being black doesn't mean you can get away with everything.

TheChimp She had paid, I am normally a supporter of the Police, they have a hard enough job as it is, also I have family members who are police officers. But watching this film it does make you think would they have been so heavy handed if she was white ?

beccatavender Heavy handed? She was refusing to move.

And turning this into a race thing doesn't really help matters at all.

beccatavender It wouldn't be a story if they were white.

Don't bring BS race into this.

PhilipMarc it’s easy to say that as a white person (i assume you are white, my mistake if you’re not) but it’s factually true that minorities are dealt with differently by police. If you were constantly under suspicion when you hadn’t done anything wrong you’d maybe refuse to move as well.

jms19 Absolute crap.

If you behave yourself, you won't be treated any differently. It's all a nonsense brought up with pro blacks.

You have to remember that blacks only account for 4% of the UK population. And how many violent crimes are caused by the 4% compared to the 80% of whites?

You take the comparison in.

Stop playing the race card because it doesn't work for the most of us, except Gen Z

TheChimp i mean if black people are statistically more likely to be stopped by police ofc the figures for crime will be higher.

jms19 That's because they are more statistically committing violent crime..

TheChimp I totally agree with you it's none stop the race comes into everything now it's a joke how anyone can say something to me but the second I say something back I'm a racist when in fact it them they bring colour into it going off my own experience

TheChimp well not necessarily, this is the thing with stats they don’t always tell the full story. If you search 10 times as many black people as white then logically the statistics will be higher for the group that had a larger data pool

jms19 I think that you are taking this to an extreme, but if blacks are offending 10 times more, why shouldn't they be searched more?

This is just conjecture from me.

TheChimp if they are offending 10 times more then yeah that’s fine to do it but the problem is the way they obtain the statistics is flawed so it’s dangerous to use them to justify something when it’s not a fair test.

jms19 Statistics are just bollocks, don't listen to them.

I've been in this area for over 20 years and basically 100% of people that have been arrested have been white.

Whites around here are probably more than 99% to get searched here. Do you know why? BECAUSE THEY ARE 99% OF THE POPULATION HERE.

And I'm talking about 10s of thousands in the area.

If statistic are “bollocks” then surely they shouldn’t be used to justify searching one group of people over another.

Ask yourself who rang the police? They were only acting on information provided.

Yet if you inform the police that your home is being burgled, they won't take an interest.

I think the whole police force needs reform. We have shoplifters all over our city stealing from shops and the police do nothing....yet they've got time to harass one women over bus fare. Something really isn't working.

Doesn't it make you wonder who informed the police that she has supposedly not paid for the bus ticket in the first place??

Disgusting behaviour, I don't think the police force is fit for purpose any more especially as they seem to have so many criminals amongst their ranks.

What about this one too.. Met police put spit hood on 90-year-old woman and pointed Taser at her

Or this one 'Stripped and left topless in a cell, I was drugged and sexually assaulted by Greater Manchester Police'
