The Pope Wants Us to Have More Babies

Other

I saw it on the news recently and then promptly forgot about it but here is some food for thought:

In 1950 the world population was 2.6 billion. 50 years later in 2000 it had far more than doubled to 6.1 billion. Today it is 8.1 billion. The Chinese count for one in three of the earth's population. My question is, why the heck do we need more babies?

I am not sure why, seeing those figures, people say population is falling. Our own tiny country is fit to serve around 40 million people but has currently more than 60 million, suppose that doubles in 50 years!?

The single most positive thing we can do for mother earth to reduce our carbon footprint, global warming, starvation, disease, homelessness, (I could go on) is to stop having loads of kids. If Starmer says you have to be brutal to solve our problems then how about a 2 kid rule and no benefits for more than that?

EDIT....HE SAID THIS TO 'SELFISH, EGOTISTICAL' YOUNG ITALIANS.

Completely agree and not everyone is able to have them. Can’t always get what you want.

JLouM I think it is strange how nature allows some not so good parents to keep popping them out and those who would be brilliant can't conceive. Nature can be cruel as well as kind.

The pope is completely out of touch with reality L , as are politicians

Mankind has all but destroyed the planet already with pollutants in the water and the atmosphere and because of climate change the planet is rebelling with so many natural disasters

We can barely sustain life on earth as it is with the present population never mind a few billion more people

And that's if we are not annihilated with WMD

Then we won't have a planet to live on never mind have more births

telmel I agree with you entirely. I may have mentioned previously that in my last job I came across a man who has 30 kids by multiple women and every one of them went through the care system costing the local authority a fortune.

Lynibis These type of people are a big worry L, besides a lack of intelligence, they also have no sense of responsibility or any thought for the future of their offspring

These kids will probably end up damaged and eventually turn to crime, unless they are lucky enough to be adopted by a caring family

I suspect that is partly why there are so many filling up the prisons today, failed by the parents and the authorities and turning to crime and drugs .

telmel they don't want to raise them themselves but don't want them adopted. They deliberately keep making appeals to slow the process down until the kids are too old to be adopted. They get to see them regularly at contact centres and when the kids reach 16 there is nothing to stop them seeing their parents secretly and ending up back with them, having been raised at our expense while the parents have total freedom of responsibility.

Leannexxx very true but the world at large has too many people, most in poverty, and we are expected to feed them. I truly wouldn't mind that if our own people were put first.

Lynibis exactly my thoughts we can't look after are own we homeless people who can't be houses but we have some in a hotel here moaning that haven't got a house then hotel is paid for and their meals they get benefits and now going on hurger strike because they want a house you know what I would do put them back on a plane to where they are from see if they still moan then this country is a joke no other country would do this

Really if the Pope want more babies let him have them , for other people it should be their decsion and nobody else's. Personally I think our country is already overcrowded and in a right mess and wonder what future and opportunities there really are for youngsters now.

That would be a real miracle lol! He has a cheek considering he lives in rich splendour and half his followers live in abject poverty. Is that what he wants these babies born in to?

I don't think the Pope should be used as a source of wisdom. The whole point of religion is to believe in some sort of fantasy history with people with super powers and often those who believe in their stories get mercy and good things and those who don't are demonised. It's like the Christian churches that burn Harry Potter books because they have witchcraft in them when the bible itself is full of stories of people who also do magical things. Mother Theresa said have children and I will look after them when firstly one person looking after 800 million children for example is very difficult and made even more difficult now that she is dead.

We need to give space to the natural world so normal natural processes can occur that regenerate life on the planet. It's clear we need to reduce our footprint on the planet so we need to de-populate and reduce our numbers and surely the first thing we should be doing is not giving benefits for having children but making it more difficult and less desirable. If we need to juggle jobs about with new policies so more elderly people get desk jobs and the young get physical jobs so be it. I certainly don't think we should interfere with people's right to have children like some countries have done but make not having children the logical choice and better choice for quality of life.

There is the real possibility of life extending drugs in the future which might extend our lifespan maybe 20 years on average, most of us would want that extension but again this puts huge pressure on earth resources.

Birth rate is dropping. At the moment it's OK for this to happen but as the older generation dies we need to be mindful of the population. It's not selfish of people to not want a family or less kids. Some can't some choose not to. The pope has to realise that we currently living in mad times. We've had rona, war in Europe and climate change

Jerseydrew Birth rate is 1.5 in the UK which is about average for Europe but in Africa some countries are approaching 7 babies per woman and much of Asia is high too. Our population is increasing mostly due to immigration. It is predicted from 2021 to 2036 that the UK population will increase by 6.6 million but 6.1 million of that is immigration. The first 3 years have exceeded that projection so who knows what the final figure will be.

BonzoBanana it's interesting to see that side of the debate. Hadn't seen this side of it.

Some fantasy man telling us what to do. Na he can get in the bin. COVID was released to reduce the population not to increase it.

I certainly won't be having more babies, one is more than enough for me. I have a friend who is having her 4th baby and says she might have another one.

Throughout history the different Pope's have said that people should be having more babies. I won't be listening to him but some people might.
