Poundland Sells 40,000 Engagement Rings Ahead of Valentine's Day
In the News
Some say it with flowers, others with chocolates - but it seems an increasing number of us are showing our affections with rings bought from Poundland.
The discount retailer told the BBC it had sold almost 40,000 engagement rings ahead of Valentine's Day this year, nearly double last year's tally.
I like to think I'm fairly low maintenance and don't require flowers or expensive meals out etc, but a poundland ring? Hmm. If it was given in any way other than a joke, then I would be very very angry.
I would be angry too! When Mr Tumblespots proposed he gave me an IOU so that I could choose my own - not from Poundland!
tumblespots that’s really sweet! I like the idea of an IOU so you get to choose your own ring! Must be so difficult trying to choose for someone
lornaae It was in a box hanging from the Christmas tree which is why it contained an IOU. He is a treasure
My wife and I thought we were cheap paying £250 & £350 for our engagement rings Its not about the money and we did pick our own rings. I think we only paid £150 for both our wedding rings because we only had thin white gold bands but thats what we liked before we even knew the price.
That's what it is all about really, finding the ring that suits your own personal taste. Cost isn't the issue for most people. Be happy and enjoy your day
I'm not a picky person for price wise but would deffo think my partner was propsing for a joke if he bought me a poundland ring.
I imagine that most people buying them are then offering to buy a 'proper' ring afterwards.
It's a good measure of whether someone wants you for your money or not too!
This is exactly what my son did last year, he had planned a trip to Barcelona with his girlfriend with the intent to propose to her and had bought a very expensive engagement ring. Due to the pickpockets in Barcelona I persuaded him not to take the expensive ring but buy one from the Pound shop just in case, which is what he did and she received the genuine ring when they were safely back home. I was so pleased that he did this as would have been terrible if the ring had been stolen.
tumblespots Absolutely, I was so worried that something bad would have happened and spoil their holiday and proposal. Best to play safe, you never know.
They launched them last year, and i believe they were popular. I guess it was a no brainer to sell them again this year
It must cost just a penny to make them so it is a good earner, I'm surprised that they are so popular though, perhaps more children buy them than adults.
lol hmmm i know its the thought that counts but im glad i didnt get one lol. i dont fancy a green finger lol
I have seen them in the store and literally made from Tin foil haha but like everyone says it’s the thought that counts haha
