The Price of Plastic Bags to Go up to 10p

News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46689684

This is likely to take effect in 2020, although I’m sure the shops can start to do this whenever they want - they charge 5p for a PAPER bag in H&M!

Plastic bags were never free - they were included in the price (whether you wanted them or not). Most of the retailers who actually openly charged for them (Aldi is one that comes to mind) actually charged less - the prices weren't absorbed into their prices.

I welcome any solution to cut down on the amount of plastic bags used - it has already been proved that the 5p charge has really helped.

I saw on news this week that plastic carrier bag use was down by 86% so I reckon that's a really good result. I always use my own bags now. Keep a fold up one in handbag.

Paying extra won't save the planet - it's only if YOU DON'T BUY, because of the extra cost, that any real good is done.

The only way to save the planet is to buy one durable bag and use it many times then recycle as required. Won't happen in practice though, impossible to implement entirely since not everyone will do as Romans do.

I really do not get it... recycle free to give those rubbish free and than they make plastic bags from it and sell it to me....Is it not a complete rip off??????

I think companies should be responsible what they pack the things in and they should change the plastic bags to other bags and give it free. There are things u should always receive a free bag with, like medication, condoms, tampons, pads......bra, pants, underwear.....Wondering who will walk on the street with a bra in hands because the bag is not free??????

it is indeed a list of items that you are not required pay the the charge for, but it doesn't include a lot of what you have mentioned:

Food and plants

You’re not required to charge for plastic bags that are for:

uncooked fish and fish products

uncooked meat, poultry and their products

unwrapped food for animal or human consumption - such as chips, or food in containers that aren’t secure enough to prevent leakage during handling

unwrapped loose seeds

flowers

bulbs, corms or rhizomes (roots, stems and shoots, such as ginger).

goods contaminated by soil (like potatoes or plants)

Products

You’re not required to charge for bags:

for unwrapped blades, including axes, knives, and knife and razor blades

for prescription medicine

used for a service, but there is no sale of goods, for example dry cleaning

Live fish and aquatic creatures

You’re not required to charge for bags holding live fish or other aquatic creatures.

Packaging, transport and promotions

You’re not required to charge for bags:

for goods in transport, such as at an airport or on a train, plane or ship

considered as sealed packaging for mail order and click-and-collect orders

used to give away free promotional material

hspexy hmm, but they put the fish in paper bags and they do not give free plastic bag with it and it has no handle, the other meats are coming in plastic boxes even if u get it from the counter, also no bag provided.

Knife is obvious, because u can not walk on the street without covering them, if u do not want to get arrested, but I do not think so, that shops provide free bags with them...

AgnesFaludi I know, I have argued with people art the supermarket about this, and often they will relent as it causes a scene, but they take the stage that as you are buying other products with the meat/fish, you need to buy a bag. I guess with the knife, I will have to try it some time! (I usually have my tote with me, but it would be interesting to see what happens)

I usually take care if I go to one store, I take an other stores plastic bag with me, so I cross advertise and come out from their store via advertising an other store....because I can do it and it is free....

I have loads of bags stashed away to get used for when I go out shopping, so that I won't have to keep getting new ones. Trouble is, I am always forgetting about them so I DO end up buying more bags.

I know what you mean - I have bags from the 90s from random shops and sometimes I like to line them up to see how the logo/design has changed over the years...so sometimes I cant bear to use them (sad me!). But I have my trusted tote tucked away in my bag...and if I ever forget to stash t in the bag (which I occasionally do), I get so annoyed that I forgot my tote that I end up leaving the shopping...lol
