Some Prisoners Can Earn More than the Prison Guards !!
In the News
It's bad enough when you read how prisoners in our jails are treated better than someone that can't pay their bills and afford heating or food, they are fed, kept warm and get priority medical treatment
Now i am reading some prisoners can earn more than the prison guards, in fact more than some people on well paid jobs
Last year one prisoner earned £36,715 , and i bet that was not taxed
My first thought was, what jobs are they doing to earn this type of money , and was shocked to read some are let out daily to drive delivery lorries on our roads !!
And don't forget , they have no overheads , they go back to the prison for their free accommodation and food afterwards
I always thought the UK was a soft touch, but this cements it , and they call this punishment
And yet an innocent guy who was finally released and got compo was told to pay back his keep from it. Shouldn't prisoners earning be expected to pay for their keep? They are inside due to their own actions so why should they not pay to live as they would outside?
Anyway, why are they let out to work. If that is the case and they are considered safe why are they not let out under the recent overcrowding situation.
its amazing how luxurious prison life is at times, they get warmth, money, luxuries, hot food etc and all for committing crimes
EKWilkes89 Don't forget free education, i bet they don't pay a loan for tuition fees for university education
Well the whole idea of prison is for the offenders to be rehabilitated back into society and I don't believe these prisoners are given these jobs. They apply for them like anyone else can and it also is low security so I assume they will be getting out in the near future so to look at it another way it's positive as they are less likely to get released and re offend or go onto job seekers.
The thing I did find wrong though is that it said that prisoners can be forced (rightly) to pay up to 40% of their wage to victim surcharge but in many cases this has been waived. I do also hope that they are getting some sort of accommodation fee taken as it seems to be a bit of a joke otherwise.
I am curious about these so-called employers employing convicts instead of non-convicts to do "proper jobs". Years ago, I watched various tv documentaries on convicts about to leave prison doing menial jobs that an employer/company couldn't fill with non-convicts.
I am hoping this is an exaggerating story involving only a dozen or less convicts and has been blown out of portion.
I'm all for making prisoners work but that is boring repetitive work that pays for their keep in prison and provides a cheap source of labour for farming and factories etc. It seems like the country has gone made with too many idealists setting the rules. I don't know the full details of this and would assume they would be paying their normal tax, national insurance etc. I guess if they have trained prisoners to be HGV drivers they are getting them ready for an existence in work outside prison. It feels wrong on face value and I suspect it is more than likely wrong even if you fully look into it too but not sure.
I know I keep repeating it but the UK's debts are getting worse and worse and the incoming labour government after first stating their fiscal responsibility are now going ahead with even more borrowing so even greater debts to be serviced which ultimately makes us an even poorer country. Everything is going to get cutback as more and more debt payments have to be made and when we default on our debt payments which can only be a few years away then we will have an emergency budget where austerity will get much, much worse where a huge amount of benefits will be drastically reduced or removed. Poor countries have much worse prisons and much harsher punishments and that is our destiny too.
At some point we will get to a government who has to deal with all the incredibly incompetence of both the Conservative and Labour governments. It's going to be like the rebuilding of Britain after WW2 and will take many decades to get back to a rational well run country.
That article is MSN the most disinformation media on the planet lol don't believe a word of it, it is true some work on day release but this for prisoners who are due for release, as part of their rehabilitation back into society
martinlufc5637 I only posted it using MSN M because its only one of a few that the link stays active, it is in other newspapers too, such as The Telegraph , as below, and on yahoo news
MSN wouldn't normally be my first choice but the link seems to stay up longer
