Prisoners Released Early Say They Will Reoffend to Go Back to Comfy Prison

In the News

This is the result of releasing prisoners early to gain space, they are reoffending to go back inside rather than be on the streets homeless, cold and hungry

And it will get worse as the winter approaches

The person in the article admitted stealing two t shirts to stay warm and said he doesn't even own underwear !

It just shows how broken the system is and why prisons are full to breaking point

Prisons with hard uncomfortable beds, no entertainment like TV, basic bland meals, only very low levels of heating and perhaps working prisoners to pay for their keep etc. Make prisons less appealing and also use prisoners as a resource with regard labour for making simple products like PPE used in hospitals etc. The USA has industry worth billions using prison labour.

BonzoBanana Thats how it should be B, but unfortunately our prisons are better than a butlins holiday camp, no wonder the criminals are queuing up to go back

telmel Well except for the fact they often they lack control in prisons so there is a lot of bullying and violence against weaker/softer prisoners. Moronic idealists set the rules and that means a lack of control and discipline in prisons. So personally I would rather not be in there but I guess if you are the type of person ignored in prison it could certainly be better than being homeless and penniless. As a said before I would never mix violent and non-violent criminals. I just feel non-violent i.e. financial crimes could be dealt with in a different way.

BonzoBanana I'm afraid nothing you have suggested is ever going to happen in prison. Have not read about prisoners suing for losing their trainers, glasses etc? The truth is most of them comes from "problem families" and are beyond help.

jam45 We are heading towards a default on our government interest payments, poverty will get much worse in this country as we have to service more and more debt but if we can't afford that debt then we will need a IMF bailout and our economy will tank as sterling will drop hugely in value. You hope in that situation the government will be forced to stop being so idealistically moronic and live within its means.

This Labour government just like the Conservative governments before it are planning huge cuts to government spending including a huge number of job cuts in the public sector. As yet there are no policies to reverse the trading deficit and restrict imports and prioritise exporting etc. There are no policies to remove us from free trading areas where we can't compete due to high labour costs here and needing to redevelop critical industries ourselves. All we have is micromanagement of failure.

The point is when the actual population is really struggling to survive it will become more unacceptable to treat prisoners so leniently. You don't get very poor countries with holiday camp prisons. The government has no way of affording 120,000 or 150,000 prisoners and with increased poverty there will be more crime.

Leannexxx As vile as rapists and paedophiles are I would reserve the death penalty for those who take the lives of others. You take a life you forfeit your own. However again if you make prisons into basic slave factories producing goods then the cost of keeping such vile people in prison reduces dramatically.

Bring back hard labour, they wouldn't re-offend anymore, prisons are soft now

martinlufc5637 It seems taking away their freedom doesn't work anymore M, it's too comfortable inside now , no need to work , everything paid for , food , priority medical and dentistry , free gym membership and gaming etc etc , why go back on the outside with all this given on a plate

telmel I still remember years ago when I couldn't afford a new Playstation 2 it was in the news that a prison had bought loads of them for the prisoners to keep them quiet and under control. To them it was a cheap way of controlling prisoners. Gaming is great entertainment though I think and many working people struggle to find time for it with their day job and stuff they have to do around the house etc.

BonzoBanana Its a strange world we live in B, the prisoners are rewarded for their crimes and we are punished with sky high prices and cuts , people needing to use food banks and turn off their heating 🙄

telmel Yeah I know a woman who is on a zero hour contract and often gets zero hours work. She is struggling to find another job and is giving up her car as can't insure it or pay the road tax on it etc. I think she is considering selling it too. She basically has enough for food and her normal costs. It seems like a real struggle for her and here quality of life is pretty low. She has a positive attitude though and is hoping her luck will change. She is still applying for jobs as much as possible but she is close to retirement age I think which of course goes against her. She is a very honest and fair person I would say. You wouldn't know she has a financial crisis just seeing her on the street, she is well dressed and fits in like everyone else but that is the reality of a lot of people in the UK now. In the next few years the government will be looking at more aggressively saying money but the one place they won't look is themselves. Benefits will only get reduced I feel. Some benefits are ridiculously generous and create economic problems in themselves.

BonzoBanana It's crazy how expensive games are nowadays and the newest PS5? £700 digital or £800ish with a disc drive.

A launch PS5 can cost £250~300 which is a lot more reasonable and I got one for that (£260 disc drive). It's on the firmware 7.00 so waiting to be hackable as I prefer the freedom a hacked console gives.

That said, I rarely use consoles that much. Lately, I just boot up my PS4 Pro just to watch shows on a USB than play games.

Not surprised. It's a life of luxury for a lot of them in there with their TVs, kettles etc and everything else they get

They make it to easy for them, in their with tvs in room etc. lack of support for when they come out. They need to look at the whole prison situation and send abroad if need more space.!

LL81 I was thinking about Rwanda before you posted L, but that's a sore point

Gilligans Island would be more appropriate , failing that , reinstate Alcatraz 😉

There was someone local to me who'd get themselves put in prison for the Xmas period just so he'd get a roof over his head for Xmas and have an Xmas dinner

Jerseydrew I am not one bit impressed with someone committing a crime because they are "homeless". Does this person know about Shelter, Crisis, Citizen Advice? What about benefits? And landlords who will only take on DSS tenants?

jam45 yes but you aren't guaranteed a place to stay as it's first come first served. A prison sentence you've a guaranteed roof over your head

This is really sad, especially as COVID showed that homelessness could be addressed as most people experiencing homelessness were temporarily housed for a while...
