Can You Put Weeds in a Compost Bin

Ask a Question

Would they simply break down like the rest or would this promote weeds. I haven't had mine very long and just learning

Imnotcheap Perennial weeds seem to survive composting - annual weeds are fine to compost. TBH I don't have a clue which are which ! I'd love to compost more but always find things sprouting in my compost bins ! -haven't a clue what they are ?

We don't tend to put weeds in our composter - they go in the green bin instead. The reason being that we don't want to actively promote extra weeds in the garden and we don't know which will take root in the future. All plants want to survive and will do so if they can.

tumblespots Green bin as in garden waste?

In our area the garden waste bin is actually the brown bin, which we have to pay annually for and is where we put any removed non-feed weeds (as the bunnies love some of them)

DeBunny Yes, our garden waste bin is green (Makes sense to me). We don't have a brown bin - the other two are black and grey.

You can but depending on the size of the plant it might grow again, from what I've read young weeds are easier as they break down quicker. You can do larger stuff but you need to make sure it's mixed with grass, water and dry leaves ect to ensure it all breaks down.
