Do I Really Need a Cooling Rack for Baking ?

Ask a Question

It almost always says in a recipe to turn the cake etc out onto one but never had one, I am now planning to bake more cakes and soda bread , would it actually help the quality? Thanks

I would recommend getting one. Leaving any cakes or bread in tins or baking trays when removed from the oven means that the product will still be absorbing heat and risks over baking. Another danger is heat trapped underneath will create condensation and you could end up with the dreaded soggy bottom! A cooling rack will allow air to flow and cool things down much quicker.

I would get one. Cooling racks allow air to flow underneath the cake or bread, which is important. It stops them from getting a soggy bottom or from overcooking and becoming dry.

Once the cake is cooked you could always turn the cake out on to the oven rack, just raise the rack up by standing on the empty cake tin.

I have always put my cakes onto a cooling rack otherwise the cakes will get a soggy bottom or stick to the tins.

I just use my grill rack as the air needs to circulate for the baking to dry, set properly.

I don't think you need to buy a cooling rack - you could always just use your grill rack or oven racks 😃

Consumer I thought the grill rack was the same as a cooling rack. My dad bought a separate cooling rack (he forgot we had one, as we put the grill rack to the side since we never use it) and it's exactly the same as the grill rack.
