How to Reduce Food Waste?
Ask a Question
How do you reduce food waste at home?
I've started to meal plan and it means we are only buying the food that we will be able to eat and not overbuying.
Freeze everything.
Invite family and friends over when have lots of leftovers.
Be like going to a buffet.
Wash, quarter and freeze lemons before they turn. Get out when juice needed for recipes, pancakes etc then throw remains in dishwasher.....antibacterial and leaves it smelling nice.
We rarely have any waste since the children have flown the nest and my husband will just finish off anything
Freezing is one of the big ones but also i try to stick to the mindset that i don’t need to buy all of what i want every time i go shopping. There’s loads of food I’ve been waiting to try but not every meal has to be amazing imo

If there are left overs (bulk cooked) that you've enjoyed why not freeze? Enjoy it that day, enjoy it afew days later.
I always freeze if there's enough.
I've had family meals everyone has enjoyed. It helps save and you get to enjoy a the meal afew days latter.
Extras happen. Freeze and save.
Antiwoke Canned food, rice, pasta, spaghetti, etc can all easily last years so it's well worth buying if it becomes more expensive.
I've bought meat and froze it so I can just go down, get a package, unfreeze, ready it, and grill it.
I'm not a prepper by any means, it's just a good idea to have it, if possible.
Freeze, fridge, and if you have lots of oranges and/or lemons, then make natural juice from them. Way better than store bought.
PhilipMarc I disagree agree with you regarding making homemade orange juice. A litre of cheap orange juice cost less than £1. How many oranges would you need to make 1 litre of fresh orange juice???
jam45 may not be cheaper but probably tastes nicer. Therefore less waste as you are likely to drink it all and not leave it go off and be binned.
I portion up my meat for the meat eaters. I freeze. Oh doesn't he throws it in the freezer as a whole. I get a whole chicken put it in the slow cooker and make multiple meals from it.
I go and look for 2nds at my greengrocers and get 2nds to cook with. Tomatoes are great for a sauce. Bananas for banana bread which goes in lunchboxes
Chop up fresh veggies and fruit and place them in bowls visible at the front in the fridge that way you're more likely to eat them knowing their prepared
Ditto we are careful on what we order on the food shopping, making sure we freeze and anything we arn't going to use in time. i cant stand the thought of food waste.
Meal planning is key, but it has to be well thought out, for example I will do a chicken roast dinner on a Sunday, therefore monday is left overs chicken and veg pie, even the bones get boiled up to for the stock for the pie gravey,I make individual pies using ready to roll pastry, makes 4 pies usually, 2 for Monday nite, and 2 for the freezer or for our work lunchboxes. If theres any of the pastry left I whack abit of cheese and tomato on it and make mini turnovers for snacks. Its about planning to make sure that ingredients left from one day can be used the next day but in a different way. Same with mince meat use half the pack one day for Bolognese and the other half the next for cottage pie, if you make too much mash when doing the cottage pie, then have bangers and mash the day after
We're pretty good at not wasting food, however my children are a nightmare. They waste so much no matter what I try.
