Can't say I'm surprised by this. Merton Council aren't the only council guilty of doing this.

I thought recycling facilities had sufficient technology to remove any contamination.

I thought the same as you HappyTravels ...until quite recently. I so wish there could be a UK wide policy and a focus on really getting to grips with recycling collection and dealing with it in the best way possible for the environment ... and let's face ... for financial value too.

That's what we sometimes do to speed up a fire, anyway.

Totally agree with BORDERJOE, it's long overdue, begged for recycling in 1980s and took local council till ten years ago to recycle other than paper and still lots of items not ...

They're missing out on generating income too, I'm sure! There are now so many more ways of re-using the materials...there's just GOT to be more cash to be made.... maybe we need some of our developers/inventors to get onto it and make us world leading in this too!!!!! Sarahvwomble

I’m not surprised. But even if they're sent off abroad to get ‘cleaned‘, they’re often dumped in some landfill

hspexy just seconds before reading your post, I opened up my BBCNews email to read this ...the thing is I can't see how it is permitted to happen ... I can't believe it's legal to export like this .....

UK plastic waste illegally dumped in Turkey - report finds UK plastic waste is being exported to Turkey and then illegally dumped and burned, according to a new report. Greenpeace investigated 10 sites across the south of the country and found plastic bags and packaging from UK supermarkets and retailers at all of them – investigators also discovered packaging for a coronavirus antigen test. Some 210,000 tonnes or about 40% of the UK’s plastic waste exports were sent to Turkey last year, according to the report. Investigators saw waste dumped by roads, in fields and waterways rather than being recycled. As Greenpeace called on the government to "take control", the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said it is "committed to banning the export of plastic waste to non-OECD countries and clamping down on illegal waste exports - including to countries such as Turkey - through tougher controls".

BORDERJOE yes, it’s atrocious. I know that previously a lot of waste was being shipped over to the Far East, but they’ve had enough of it. Consumerism is killing the planet - there’s no quick solution to it

hspexy well the first step is for someone with some oomph to take a clear view and then get a plan sorted and get started .... but there's me dreaming the impossible yet again! ...

My recycling bin is emptied every 2 weeks and it's always full to the brim. My daughter asks me why I clean the empty plastic milk cartons and tins when they will be dumped in a landfill ??? Image

I’ve fed up with recycling because it’s not done correctly. They send plastic to other countries to get recycled then those countries don’t recycle it either. It’s a big con. We take the time to try our best then they just stick it in landfills. Or burn it. They can’t recycle all of it as there isn’t enough recycling centres etc.

More needs to be done. And we are all treated like idiots. The powers that be are a joke.

That’s how I feel Image

Very true, all smoke and mirrors, like the fuss over carrier bags while they churn out rigid and soft plastic wrapping on everything...

I'm not at all surprised we have seen them emptying the different coloured glass recycling containers all into one big waste bin before now, so why are we asked to separate it? I think they ask us to separate things and wash things just to make us think that we are all looking after the planet, the sad fact is - we aren't.

We need a national strategy for recycling so all councils do the same. But, it is up to all of us to reduce the amount of plastic that we use.

Sad to say . it's not news , has always been so . Difficult to work out how much stuff in your "recycle" bins actually gets recycled - as it's the councils themselves who provide the stats ! Marking their own homework 🙄.
