Ryanair Introduces Drinks Ban on Flights to Popular Holiday Destinations

In the News

Ryanair have implemented a new ban on certain duty free items for anyone flying from the UK to Ibiza, Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Palma and Tenerife South

You will not be allowed to carry alcohol on board and all cabin baggage will be searched at the boarding gates

If they are found to be concealing alcoholic drink they will be banned from the flight with no compensation

I understand they are trying to stop people topping up their soft drinks with bought alcohol on the flight , for example , and trying to prevent drunken brawls etc on board, so i suppose it does go someway to stopping this

But they still need to stop people boarding who have been boozing for hours in the airport lounge areas

A friend of mine recently visited Ibiza using Ryanair, she said it was complete carnage on board, with fighting, shouting, people blaring out music and harassing other passengers.

She also said the Ryanair cabin staff seemed too scared to intervene, and who can blame them!

My guess is that the next step will be stopping selling alcohol on board, but then surely those of a certain mindset will just cane it at the airport before boarding.

blacklabrador That's the problem B, you can stop people bringing it on board and stop selling it to them , but you cannot stop them getting tanked up before boarding

Then there is the drug problem, if some cannot drink they might resort to taking a social drug before or even onboard

I am sure the scanners do not pick up everything and especially if taken before getting to the airport

So if I understand it right, no alcohol in the hand luggage which is a bit of an issue with Ryanair cause they charge so much to put a suitcase in the cargo hold.

I definitely agree something needs to be done if drunk people are becoming a problem but this also seems like another trick by ryanair to get people to pay their extortionate fees for non hand luggage.

jms19 It does make you wonder if they are doing it for the right reasons J

I know some people drink to help sedate them as they afraid of flying, but the ones getting blottoed are the problem, they are completely out of control

Alcohol from duty free isn't the problem but people rocking up at the airport drinking and getting on a flight and drinking more.

Jerseydrew I think some people take the saying 'your holiday starts now' too literally concerning booze, for some it starts the day before flying

I have been on some early morning flights , some long haul years ago , where people would be drinking wine or beer at 7.00 am in the morning !!

Would they do this at home, cornflakes and a can of stella ?

telmel there's having a glass of wine or a beer at 7am at the airport and then getting blind drunk

telmel Ryanair needs to face facts: their air tickets is far too cheap. The same goes for the duty free shops.

jam45 The tickets aren't as cheap as they used to be J, it costs more for luggage and seating now than the tickets cost

And you don't have duty free anymore as such unless you are in certain countries

I think with some passengers if they want to get drunk they are willing to pay anything

jam45 duty free isn't that cheap. I brought a bottle of wine October and it wasn't that cheap. I went for it because it was a thank you to my brother and sil for letting us dog sit/crash at theirs. The dog sitting was just a bonus given our family treat pets as our own.

I never bought food/drinks because it's so expensive and a dang miniature.

However, if flights were like this I'd not mind buying 😆

Great music and video P, but i am not sure about the bit where the pilots get knocked out and a drunken passenger takes over the flying, i doubt i would be dancing in the aisle, more likely looking for the parachute 😄

I'm surprised no one has done it sooner. Drunk idiots in a confined space are no fun for anyone.

Breathalyse everyone before boarding the plane will put a stop to it.

Maybe we ( unfortunately) need another security measure. A breathalyzer test before boarding. It may become compulsory after some drunken passenger pulls open the emergency exit door open mid flight!

As ever rather than tackle the people and not let them board the plane

Let’s penalise the majority for the minority

Not all of us going to those destinations will wanting to get drunk on the flight

Although I never understand I can tell the person has been drinking but they are happy to sell them more drinks during the flight- can’t have it both ways

It’s like the resorts who moan about the drunks, they ultimately made it that way with huge measures and free shots they are happy to take the money and then they moan about the consequences - take some responsibility

I flew Ryanair once in 2013 and have never again a horrible experience from airport boarding to the flight

Some friends experienced them for the first time last month and vowed not to fly with them again

The trouble with this, is that the other airlines will copy the policy like they do for example with reducing hand luggage size it’s a very sheep industry
