Sainsburys Require Customers to Scan Receipts before Leaving the Store

In the News

Sainsburys are not allowing customers in some stores to leave without scanning their receipts

There is a barrier that prevents customers leaving until they scan the product receipt to open it

Some people are taking to social media to vent their anger and say they will stop shopping at sainsburys because of this

Personally i have no problem with it , the only people i could see objecting to it would be the thieves not paying for items who are causing the problem in the first place

People are complaining because they don't normally take the receipt and don't want to take one ?

The receipts come out of the self service machines, for example, automatically after payment, so are these complainers leaving the receipts hanging out of the slot for scammers to obtain their details ?

I think all retailers should use this method, it would help to reduce thefts and keep the prices from increasing more than they should because of thieving

So, where do you go if you can't produce your receipt? Is there a holding area and how long will they keep you there for? Days, weeks, it's absurd really.

Cashiers often look quizzical when I say that I want a receipt... Personally I do always want a receipt and am dismayed if I am not offered one. I keep a list of my purchases so that I know how much the credit card bill will be when it arrives and also know how much I have left to spend. How do you keep track of your finances if your don't get receipts?

I rarely use the 'do it yourself tills' as I think they harbour germs but the last time I used one it asked me at the end IF I wanted a receipt. If you have to produce it to leave the shop them it should just come out automatically (as they used to do).

tumblespots Also a lot of people need a receipt to claim points from certain schemes T

telmel Is this the kind of thing where you have to tell them absolutely everything about you in order to get the extra points? If so, that's probably why I don't do them.

I see the theory behind this, but what if they don't have what you want and you have to go elsewhere and are not making a purchase , I sometimes pop into Sainsburys just to pick an odd item or say milk for work which last Tuesday they didn't have ( not unusual for my local store not to have stock of something) .

The other point not just Sainsburys but other supermarkets also don't automatically give you receipts at the tills now, you specifically have to push the button on screen to get one which many people don't

Mango4 I suppose they would have to issue you a no purchase ticket to get out m, but then that would give thieves an opportunity to steal goods without declaring

I use the Store Rewards app to get points and vouchers for my receipts so keep them anyway but I imagine this is gonna cause a wealth of setbacks and problems. Shop Lifters will checkpoint the shops where they don't have to and/or go elsewhere I am sure.

As people shamelessly loot and shoplift, it's no wonder they require to see receipts although they do need to hire security guards that'll actually do their job.

PhilipMarc I think this is a way of reducing the need and cost of security P, but i doubt if it will

PhilipMarc True P, i can see some kicking off over this , literally , especially if the barrier stops working

With the state of the economy and continuing price increases I’m sure shoplifting has become intolerable for all supermarkets. I have no objection to showing a receipt.

Pjran Same here P, if you have nothing to hide why not , you have to put your parking ticket in the machine to exit the carpark, this is just the same , but you are exiting the supermarket on foot

The self scan checkouts don’t automatically give you a receipt, it gives you the option to print one or not. I personally always get a receipt so I can earn points with Shoppix etc.

snoogans888 I used Sainsbury's self-scan today and it didn't give the option to have a receipt it automatically printed one out.

TiaTia oh really? Maybe it’s a really new change then as all the ones I’ve used previously have asked. The last one I used was on Friday.

snoogans888 Popped into sainsbury this morniing and all self scan tills are automatically producing a receipt now and there's a couple more barriers been put up with a scanner at the top but I wasn't asked to scan my receipt yet.

Have personally had issues where the barriers don’t scan receipts properly, so there’s a massive hold up to try to get out of the store…and staff won’t have receipts to pop in and out when sorting out the baskets, etc, so I often see them push past the barriers with force…I’m sure those who steal will always find a way

So what happens if you don't buy anything? I understand wanting to stop shop lifting but there must be a simpler way.

Midnightflower I think it was 2018/19 I visited Venice, and entered a supermarket there just fine, but exit? The gates wouldn't open without a receipt so I had to wait for a customer to scan her receipt.

They didn't think that thru since there's always consumers who leave empty handed.

Unless there has been some recent change in the law (which I doubt) any shop that refuses to let a customer leave or deliberately delays a customer leaving their premises (no matter how short the delay) could be guilty of false arrest/illegal imprisonment. Reasonable cause to believe the customer was trying to steal MIGHT be a defence.

Most stores know the above which is why so many shoplifters get away with it - I hardly think any stores hoodwinking innocent shoppers into thinking they are guilty unless proving themselves innocent, will do much good. The seasoned shoplifters know the law better than those stores do.

I went to my local Sainsburys this morning - I got a receipt as usual, but it wasn't needed to leave the shop.

SalmaS it is easy to walk out of Costco without anything if you are empty handed as a human is there. Its not like you need receipts to validate your car for parking. If this needs to be done. It just shows we are becoming more of a broken society.
