School Reprimanded for Illegally Using Facial Recognition Software in Canteen

In the News

Not having a youngster at school anymore i can only give a vague opinion of what i think about this

I know parents of kids at school at present reading this might have stronger feelings

To be honest i am torn on whether i would want face recognition used on my child

Yes , it is a sort of invasion of privacy , but it was being implemented to speed up the queues for the school dinners

And faster service means a more efficient run school with spare time that could be used to put towards the lessons or other activities

Opting a child out was not valid or lawful in this case and if it was, how could they police this anyway , and know when to turn the facial recognition on and off depending on the parents consent or no consent ?

This technology is available at some airports already and is used on both adults and children , but they say the image is deleted immediately after it is taken

Whereas the schools system saves the images and information until after the pupil leaves the school

I would be interested to hear anyones opinion on this ?

It's important to know if every pupil is eating enough broccoli, Brussels sprouts and prunes. Or, indulging too much with a second helping of sticky toffee pudding with custard.

Spy ware is everywhere and it has no place on schools, they will use any excuse to spy on you, how does this improve anything in schools.....

Yeah I get you on the speed of service. However we have situations where there's kids with no lunch for reasons that would be rejected from eating. We have parents that send their kids to school thinking they have sorted hot lunch out and they haven't. We would give them lunch and sort out afterwards. Tech is great but not as great as humans we know our kids and aren't a computer that only says yes or no

telmel yup. In my school we know our kids. We tend to have to wing it bit with the staff as it's a private company but 9 times out 10 we are over supplied with food. We know if a kids sick so can give tge meal to the kids without. Tbf I also bring bread into school from olio so they can have toast

telmel small school, deprived area. We are one of the smallest schools in the area but have one of highest percentage of sen kids. So we don't have a choice but to be organised or be another place that fails the families/kids

Jerseydrew ..Well done for everything you do for the children, making sure they have food..

It's like shopping at the supermarket I always go to the Assistant behind a till rather than self service.
